Comment:

Tho' circumstances have conspired to keep me away me from these parts for the past coupla months, they haven't proved nearly strong enough to put a crimp my charity-shop vinyl-truffling habit.
Here's a selection culled from some of my recent acquisitions together with a few observations...

Tk 1:Know nothing about this album. It was a punt based on the sleeve & paid off handsomely. Soundtrack-in-search-of-a-movie kind of thing. Bits of it had me positing a bizarre hybrid of ZNR & Calexico.
Tk 2:Not the Harry J & The Allstars classic, but the Lalo Schifrin composed theme to a sub-Bond knock-off starring Rod Taylor. Shirl belts it out with customary gusto.
Tk 3:One of Lennon's best mates in a rare visit to the Brill Building
Tk 8: Thom Bell was still at the helm so they hadn't yet succumbed to the schmaltz they always flirted with. Remarkably unsentimental & pragmatic lyrics.
Tk 9: Ken reveals himself to be a lot more raw & fiery than you'd guess solely on the basis of "Everything I Own"
Tk 10: Political satire from Trojan & the "My Boy Lollipop"-er. Who'd a thought it?
Tk 12: I unaccountably missed out on the Sadistics at the time. What an idiot! Possibly the most ear-opening of my purchases. A word to the wise Super-Furry fan.
TK 13: Blue Mink were essentially a conglomeration of the best British sessioners of the early 70s. Naturally they could turn their hands to most styles as this chunk o funk demonstrates.
Tk 14: One of the loveliest songs of the past 40 years. I'd be amazed if the Wondermints hadn't heard this before they decided to cover it.
Tk15: Hank Marvin axe-hero!
Tk 18: Mitch starts casting a few interested glances in the direction of (gulp) psychedelia. A definite modal sound to those guitar-licks.
Tk 20 Know absolutely zilch about this or any of the other tracks on this suspicious-looking Dutch compilation. They all appear to be super-rare rockabilly sides and they are without exception teriffic! A great find.
Tk 22 Slade get all grown-up and serious on the opening track to the album tie-in of their only feature film (The Citizen Kane of pop movies according to one critic). A McCartney-esque piano vamp. Noddy sounding alternately exhausted, battered, bewildered & wistful. A rasping, riffing brass section. A running-length of almost 6 minutes. It shouldn't work. But it does.

There's so many tracks on this mix that aren't in my media library I almost want to cry. Tracks 10, 12 & 20 are all on my ever expanding wish-list! This looks great.. (listening to the Slade track as I type!)

Plushpig! Excellent. "ZNR & Calexico" sounds pretty cool to me.
