well yeah, halloween is over, boys and girls and men and women take off their masks and put on their suits and go back to reality, or something like that. i wanted to do a covers mix for halloween instead of a halloween mix (which for me would have probably just consisted of misfits songs, fiona apple's version of "sally's song" from that nightmare before xmas special edition, and the rest filled up with dead kennedy's halloween over and over to fill the rest.)... while making my 'me first' mix i sent my friend tara, who loooves the beatles, the me first cover of strawberry fields cause its so darn good, and she actually liked it. now heres the thing. my dear lovely tara haaaaaaates covers. hates em. she wants a cover to sound just like the original, and then whats the point. while i like it like those too (see fishbone's cover of subline's date rape) i love a good take on a cover that discovers new things and makes you look at a classic song in a new way (see moby's version of bad brains' sailin on), or, just a really weird version that makes you scratch you head (obviously, see shatner's lucy in the sky with diamonds which i didnt put on here cause it was just too easy and everyone has it anyway). So when she told me she hated fiona apple and her version of across the universe , i was filled with demonic rage and my normal lethargy went from an energy rate of one to an energy rate of like 2.5 easy. and so this mix was birthed as a result, with the good the bad and the ugly just for her. im sure this mix has been sone a million before by a million better mixers, and with that in mind i didnt look over ones that have been made.

pure gems include the me first songs, shudder's version of imagine, and oh my god the supremes' version of you can't do that - from the album "a bit of liverpool"...just awesome.

and the pure bizarre, like marty gold's moog version of get back, takako minekawa's beep beep version of drive my car (so weird i had to put it on even tho it was already rep'd by the donnas) and oh boy, mrs. miller's a hard days night, a warbling old lady somewhere between a shower diva and an opera singer a half beat off a karioke track that is almost too surreal to be true...forget shatner, miller is the huh when it comes to the cover.

anyway, lets hope she enjoys the holiday treats.

Cool! Always like seeing those Beatles cover mixes. Cristina also does a very Betty Boops-ish version of Drive My Car.

beatles covers are usually a dime a dozen, but you picked a bunch of the best. some of my other favorites: elliott smith covering "yer blues". and of course, david bowie "across the universe". nice job!

Any chance for a trade?
