Comment:

I'm usually a silly perfectionist with my mixes, but I made this the day before my best friend and I took off for Iceland for the Airwaves music festival, so I was in kind of a rush. Hence the mismatched potpourri here, but in addition to my iPod and a few CDs I was bringing, I wanted to make a mix to commemorate (and, later, immmortalize) our unique trip. As a rather hermetic San Diego native, I've never been outside the U.S. before, so this was a big, weird undertaking, and now the songs on this mix will always be associated with the experience (although I mainly just listened to this on the several flights we took, not so much in Reyjkavic.

For the record, we had an incredible time. Our main reasons for going were Tilly and the Wall and Mates of State, two of our favorite bands, with the allure of Jens Lekman (replacing Jenny Wilson at the last minute) and The Go! Team rounding it out, plus a bunch of interesting new music. Everyone delivered with stupendous panache.

Anyway, forgive the assortment I've made here. 80% is music I had just recently discovered (new Of Montreal, new Tom Waits, new Me First, Springsteen's "Seeger" outtake, Be Your Own Pet, Oxford Collapse), or realized I liked after knowing it for a long time (i.e. Bob Dylan's cover). Others are gems from previous mixes (Lemonheads, Ladybug, Dixie Chicks) or included specifically for the occasion (Tilly, Mates, Jens). Coincidentally, all 3 of them actually played the songs I used on here - good times :)

As for Toto, well, I've been having a revival of it lately. Even after hearing it 5 million times over the past 20 years, I still can't enough of its cheesy majesty. I love it. Cheers!

Sounds like a great trip Mike. Love number 5 and if there is a better throwaway lyric in modern pop history than " I can't go away with you on a rock climbing weekend what if somethings on tv and its never shown again" I'd love to hear it. God bless the Dando.

there's a whole lot to like here. "the outdoor type" has to be one of my favorite lemonheads tunes (it's hard to define favorite because i like them so much!), and i'm a big fan of most of the other stuff. nicely done!

Really nice looking travel mix. Have to agree with jab that "Africa" is a great song. Glad you had a great trip.

Sounds like a top time. Been wanting to see Iceland for years now... and T&TW and Jens in the bargain! Terrific mix.

sounds like a great trip and I really like this mix. recently discovered Jens Lekman myself, and not long ago I added a fistfull of Toto 45s to my collection, including "Africa," "99" and "Stranger In Town." cheezy majesty: well put!
