Comment:

Say what one wants about Liam Gallagher's unbearably yobbish personality or Noel Gallagher's occasionally misplaced arrogance (most of which has at least passed into the past at this point), but Oasis can be a pretty fantastic rock 'n ' roll band when they want to be and Noel certainly has the ability to write transcendently anthemic, life-affirming pop hooks. While this compilation, like the recent "greatest hits" that's been issued (at least in the U.K.), is incredibly front-loaded with their earliest work, I believe that their last record, Don't Believe the Truth, was their finest work in a decade and I'm curious to see where they go from this point. Because I haven't listened to them much for awhile, I was surprised at the sheer number of great songs in their repertoire (again, mostly from their first 18 months as a recording unit), and many had to be cut to prevent this from becoming a three-disc set, notably "Bring It on Down," "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," "Guess God Thinks I'm Abel," "Married with Children," "Hello," "Whatever," "The Hindu Times," "I Hope, I Think, I Know," "D'Yer Wanna Be a Spaceman?", "Lyla," "D'You Know What I Mean," "Where Did It All Go Wrong?" and "Go Let It Out." I have to admit that I even have a guilty appreciation of Liam's maudlin "Little James." And yes, I like "Wonderwall" well enough and was not attempting to be contrarian by omitting it... I just honestly *never* need to hear it again. FYI, this is an expansion/update of a single-disc mix that I did/posted years ago...

When they are good they are great, when they are bad they are shocking - see Songbird. But you've included Talk Tonight, Acquiesce, Slide Away and Masterplan. The only ommission worthy of note is the fantastic Sunday Morning Call, not that i'm overly fussed on Noels vocals. Good job Rob.

Haha, yeah, if I never have to hear Wonderwall again I don't think I'll complain. Not that I actively dislike it, but....you know. I saw Noel Gallagher on TV the other day (he seems to do a lot of talking head things these days) and he was complaining that, whenever a new Oasis album is released, people still come up to him and ask, "But will it be as good as Definitely Maybe?" I have to say, I see their point. It's still my favourite album of theirs (although I was firmly in the Blur camp during the Britpop Wars ;) ) and I am glad to see Live Forever, etc., on there. Having said that, I think you've chosen really well from the most recent albums and have to admit that I'm glad you didn't have room for Lyla! I also like your inclusion of Cast No Shadow. Good job, overall! At the moment they're doing "MYSTERIOUS NEW OASIS ALBUM"-type TV ads over here, so it'll be interesting to see what they produce...

everything i detest about england can be summarised by oasis and their ilk...yet i do seem to own a fair few oasis albums and i can't help but admire the way liam stretches out a vowel and noel steals...btw one of Liams fave bands are SClub Juniors which shows you where his heads at...actually whenever I see or hear Oasis I'm always reminded of that fabulous Harry Enfield sketch...I do like rocking chair a great deal...& the b-side album they put out was pretty darn good...but like Siobhan I was a Blur man but unlike her I'm from the south....I think Blur appealed more to the ladies and Oasis to the blokes...actually when i saw the title i thought this was gonna be a Leonard Cohen retrospective...but i suspect your line up of tracks makes for a pretty good listen.

one of my favorite bands from the 90's, actually, so i'm glad you got around to updating this. morning glory has got to be one of my top 10 favorite albums of the decade, even if their later work became incredibly flakey & inconsistent. happy to see "cast no shadow" & "some might say" here -- this looks like a great summary...

Can't claim to be Oasis' biggest fan, although I have seen them live about 7 or 8 times ( a fab live act ). I must admit tho, hearing Definitely Maybe for the first time as a fresh faced 18 year old was a pretty great experience. Having said that I much prefered Blur's Parklife album that was released a couple of months previous ( I'm with Siobhan & Dom on the Blur vs Oasis debate, and I'm a Manc! ).
Onto the mix.. Favorities here are Acquiesce, Rockin' Chair, Cast No Shadow & Gas Panic! I'd have made room for 'The Hindu Times' which I thought was a brief return to form & 'Whatever' which is a great song, let down only by some truly dreadful drumming. It was probably a big factor in the sacking of Tony McCarroll...

Oasis/Blur/Noel/Liam/early albums/later albums/North/South -- blah, blah, blah etc. -- arsed?I see "Supersonic" on here, and that's good enough for me.

saw a band play 'supersonic' last night - reminded me how pretty great those first 2 records were (pretty heavily represented on this mix). 'live forever' is pretty amazing. still, for my money, they're no supergrass.

this is great! :) I wish you hadn't had to cut "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" or "D'You Know What I Mean" because those are two of my favorites. I haven't heard their most recent album, but this mix makes me want to :)

I never could get past their personalities long enough to give their music a chance.

I have to admit I'm among those who (probably unfairly) gave these guys a complete pass, largely because I was thoroughly sick of the radio singles within a day or two and couldn't get past that. Or maybe it's just that every time I came close to picking up one of their albums, I though, "Eh, maybe I'll just go home and listen to the Stone Roses instead." But, ok, perhaps it's time to get past that and give them a try.

I agree with Pop Kulcher. The Oasis overkill via radio, tv, papers and such caused me to tire of them, but they did make a lot of good songs. I should probably check them out again.

Ditto what has been said below. I was firmly in the Blur Camp - Oasis always had a whiff of arrogant thuggery about them. In my head I'll never be able to decouple 'Don't Look Back In Anger' from pissed-up teenage singalongs, either.

I've always liked 'em, even the arrogance for the most part. Great picks, Rob!

As someone who missed out on Cool Britannia, completely, this is a nice source. I am sure there are quite a few tunes on here that I know enough to say "Oh, so that's who that is...."

Found myself alone having lost me mates at Glastonbury '94, so thought I'd check out a band who by their name I thought would be kinda mellow. They blew me away but I figured it was just me getting carried away by it all cos I was on me lonesome. Mind you I own zilch by them, give me The Verve & Pulp over Oasis & Blur any day.
