Comment:

I guess one man's jazz is another man's pop tune. For jazz purists this must be like handing over a Britney Spears mix to Rot Grrl enthusiasts, a Clash mis to Crass fans, a Shakin' Stevens mix to Rockabilly fans - you get the picture. It's a tad too easy, a tad too funky and the longest track manages to come in under 7 minutes and heck there's even a few 3 minute wonders. Jazz is hard work & some of it - some of the holy touchstones of jazz - are just too hard work for my ears. Due to some of the tracks length, I've moved some tracks from side a-b & vice versa. Instead of listing the nationalities, most of which are US, I've listed the label. Enjoy.

I like-to-love a lot of this stuff.

Yes, a 1967-1969 jazz mix without Bitches Brew -- THE seminal jazz/fusion (or any other genre, for that matter) album of the latter 60s -- is a bit much, but there's absolutely nothing to sniff at here. (The Sorcerer is fine Davis, but it doesn't make the same musical advances as BB). I've been entertaining a very similar mix, actually, starting post 1969, but with many of the same players as you've featured. Top marks!

A veritable Who's Who of the day. And Leif couldn't have said it better. I'll put this together as I think I like the way it flows. And look forward the the post-69 mix. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with a lot of stuff here, but on the basis of your other recent mixes and the bits here I do know, I feel confident that this is another belter.

A fantastic era in jazz, sorely overlooked and well worth exploration. Nice picks all around.

At times I love the hard work stuff - my first jazz love was the stuff my old boss called "headache jazz" - Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and anything else that I felt was the jazz equivilent of punk. But more often, I want my jazz to be a bit more tuneful and pleasing to the ear. You've hit some of my faves (Byrd, McGriff, Donaldson...), which makes me think maybe I should go back and give Geroge Benson another try, since you've included him with so much other great stuff.

Shit.....you'd be surprised how bad I want this. The godfather of Deep Funk is one of my best friends, and while I don't relate to this stuff so easily nor know much about it, gosh, this sure would bring a smile to his face.
