Comment:

File under Surprising Rediscoveries, if you will. Pulled their 1990 debut Some Friendly out of storage recently as was pleasantly surprised by how well it's held up over the years, certainly more so than much of the late 80s/early 90s Manchester/shoegaze retro/dance stuff. Maybe not quite as perfect as the Stone Roses' contemporaneous debut, but pretty damn close. Anyway, I didn't pay much attention to them after that, but recently notices that they issued a new album this year. Did some backtracking, and was kinda surprised to find they've been steadily releasing new music throughout the past 15 years, mostly well below the radar screen (at least here in the states). I picked up most of the back catalog, and there are a lot of real gems there. Maybe none of their albums is as start-to-finish consistent as the debut (though 1997's Telling Stories is pretty great), but all have a handful of great songs. Yes, there is a tendency towards a certain saminess -- I could probably have done this as a single-cd mix without losing any essential tracks -- but the grooves are strong, and the hooks are worth waiting for. Recent efforts are a bit less interesting, but they had a really strong run in the mid-90s that merits reexamination; give 'em another shot if you get a chance.

not bad for a band who stole everything they know from deep purple's version of 'hush'. i kid. this was a great band. my wife always rates their show as one of the most fun live concerts she'd seen.
