Comment:

A look back at those in the music world who passed away in 2006. The acts featured in the 15-22 stretch all lost key members. Namely Sandy West, Drummer from the `Runaways'. Grant McLennan of the `Go Betweens', Singer Bill Cowsill. Joseph Hill, leader of Reggae icons `Culture'. Tony Sylvester of 70s Soul act `The Main Ingredient'. `Swell Maps' Nikki Sudden, just 49. Darren Brown of early 90's shoegazers `Mega City 4, and Freddie Garrity of `Freddie & The Dreamers' fame..
All the best to everyone here at AOTM over the festive season. I'll see y'all in 2007.

NOTE : This mix was updated 12/26/06. God Bless You James Brown.

How very apposite. Here we are preparing for another festive, frolicsome blowout, and you remind us of the essential transcience of it all. I don't mean this in a negative way. No, not at all; let's enjoy the fun and the togetherness, and remember those whose lives have touched us, however inconsequentially. What better time of year to reflect, recall and celebrate. A worthy tribute mix, and damned entertaining too. Cheers, Sam. Merry Christmas.

Splendidly compiled mate. Some big losses this year, not least Anita, Wilson and Ali. A poignant memorial here and I shall raise a glass to them all this very evening when I listen to this bad boy. Thanks for all the great music this year Sam. Have a top chrimbo.

Seeing this track list makes me realize just how transitory it all is. The music world had some great losses this year. Excellent tribute, Sam.

I've enjoyed each & every mix you've blessed us with this year Sam & this is no exception. Makes me kinda wish there'll be no ingredients fer you to blend next year tho, however no doubt there'll be ammo aplenty!

It's a sobering thought when you see them all together like this.

On the bright side, heaven is now a tad more soulful and psychedelic. Happy holidays, Sam.

really great twist on the end-of-the-year mix, sammy -- & as everyone else has stated, it goes to show how transcendent it all really is. lots of overwhelming losses in the musical world, but most importantly, lots of really great tunes. happy holidays to you & yours

Well if there's a rock and roll heaven...

Wasn't Mr. Cowsill's death Katrina-related?

Excellent tribute to a worthy set. Thank you Sam.

PS Speaking of track 13 have you seen

They will all be missed. Grant McLennan the most, for me. (Though Syd's was a jolt.)

Rather a sobering list: what an interesting alternative year-end mix you've come up with here. Anyway, a very happy new year and keep up the great mixing in 2007.

the post-listen comment: great stuff, Sam. loved the Ivor Cutler, Ali Farka Toure tracks and that entire 10-16 bit went over real well with me. (Martha Tilton is new to me, very nice.) I've just recently started exploring some of Gene Pitney's music; it's sad to see him gone.

Really, really nice, mr. G, and I'm sorry to have jumped in so late here - not even in 2006! Was especially sad about Gene Pitney and Nikki Sudden, although of course all of them were terrible losses. Having said that, blasikin makes a very nice point. A very happy 2007 to you, and hope it's as fruitful in the mixing territory as last year :)
