Comment:

For my first mix of 2007 (well, last mix of 2006, actually, but for obvious reasons I didn't quite get it together in time to post last night), please allow me to introduce (to many of you, I suspect) one of the greatest bands of the 1980's. What? Never heard of 'em? Sadly, you weren't alone. They were a mid-80s college radio fave, falling roughly in the jangly guitar jumble populated by R.E.M. and the Connells and Guadalcanal Diary and the like. But, hailing from northern NY, rather than the south, they had a chillier sound, almost bluesy, a more melancholy (but no less melodic) feel, highlighted by the (apparently late) vocalist's almost Morrison-like baritones (Morrison as in Jim, not Van). Though there is a jangle pop element, on the whole (and particular towards their final album) this is more akin to what has come to be thought of as Americana or roots rock, albeit without a notable country influence, and would not be out of place alongside Uncle Tupelo or the Jayhawks. Brilliant stuff. Alas, they only stuck around long enough for a few outstanding ep's and a couple lp's, all of which are out-of-print (and some of which I have only on vinyl, which I had to clean up a bit for this mix). If you manage to track down a used copy of Wait Till The Morning, a cd re-release of their first 2 ep's, grab it at all costs.

Yep, that's the Gene Clark tune. Nice, punchy cover (recorded around the same time as Yo La Tengo's interchangeable cover of the same tune).
