Comment:

A truly great American band, though one I'll admit isn't always easy on the ears and thus spends a lot less time in play on my stereo than it's probably due. A haunting mix of stark Americana and grungy guitar workouts, somewhere between Television and Crazy Horse. Though their punk-ish debut Days of Wine & Roses gets most the kudos, I'm equally taken in by the slightly more classic-rock oriented later albums. A few songs each from their great run of studio albums spanning the 80s.

This is great--I'd love to get a copy of this.

Sensitive young men adrift in poetic slumbers or 4 perverts sniffing a discarded dress. The hatted chap obviously had a head start on his comrades and bears the heady expression of one who has sniffed too much. I do believe the 2 young men on my right have indulged their eyes in eye make up. The chap on the far right wins in the race to androgony -the chap with the poodle coiffeur should really stick to wearing his feminity under his clothes. Actually, shock horror I do own their debut on vinyl but I was never taken with it. But I'm sure if I were to investigate their other back cat I might be surprised.

Here's the thing, Pop, old chap, when you post a single-artist mix from an act that I have great knowledge of, I promise to make a worthwhile addition to the feedback section. Yes, I know some of the work here, and I am certainly not averse to its pleasures. However, I am, as ever drawn to Dom1's ongoing band photo synopses. I'm sure you'll admit he's struck a rich vein with this series. I feel sure you'll take all this in top form, like the good egg that you are. Anyway, ignorant savage that I am, you will have no difficulty in believing that "Tell Me When It's Over" is my pick of the bunch. There I go, ever the populist.

Yes, it's fantastic. Their sophomore album is severely underrated

I loved their first couple of LPs and the followup live album but I admit to not knowing much of their late 80s output. Wonderful mix and an insightfully amusing comment by Dom.

I, too, have taken to making mixes for the sole purpose of eliciting comments from Dom. However, for fear of being a stickler, I will note that the androgynous chap on the right is, in fact, of the female gender, and thus wearing [her] femininity under [her] clothes might be a bit much to ask. (Specifically, that would be Kendra Smith, who left the band after the first album and joined Rain Parade's David Roback in the psychedelic duo Opal, only to be replaced by a new female vocalist for the Roback's later Mazzy Star.)

I miss the cheesy brilliance of "When You Smile" here, but still, this looks like a great compilation.

great band, but for my money..... kendra smith gets the award for best alumna. opal's "early recordings" is among my fave lp's of ALL time. lots of classics here, of course.

Damn, I could have sworn that was ZZ Top on the cover, though I was puzzled that there was a fouth member pictured. A roadie, perhaps? Somehow the DS has eluded me all these years. I'm looking at the song titles, hoping that one of them will trigger a response -- but sadly, nothing. Nada. Guess I better investigate their back cat as well. Meow.
