Comment:

part one of a series of tapes which i've been trying to get together for a couple months. side A, all Icelandic musicians. sugarcubes & bjork are the country's most famous export and she makes three appearances here. first, singing in her native tongue, on cat. secondly, on a hector zazou compilation from a few years ago, again singing in icelandic. lastly, the final track on the first side is bjork performing with her father's jazz group prior to any sugarcubes release. other info on these bands: mum dabbles in dub/electronic/ambient, quiet and gorgeous. magga stina sings in a voice we imagine would come from our cat, if she were inclined to talk to us. minus is an icelandic hardcore band. sugarcubes, sigur ros, and bjork are obviously the most well-known bands here, but none of them were voted icelandic's greatest musicians of the 20th century. that distinction goes to the utangardsmenn (translation: the outsiders), a punk-blues-driven band with a love for reggae. they do a great cover of "i wanna be your dog." egill s is a man i can't quite figure out. he does an incredible david bowie impersonation on the opening track of his album, but the song appearing here is just amazing. it's obvious he's got a sense of humor. i think he dedicated this track to michael jackson.

B side: all of these songs are performed by Polish musicians. magic carpathians are an incredible group and i don't think i can do them justice here. they've put out 4 albums in the last 24 months, the most recent on drunken fish. they were born out of the ashes of atman a couple of years ago. baltyckie szepty is a group associated with magic carpathians. the kury track is one of my favorites here. most of the stuff on this side is available from the obuh label, whose founder seems to be wrapped up in numerology. every release is numbered conspicuously or limited to 111, 222, or 333 copies. the marchlevski track is the only one here sung in english, best i can tell. this side flows much better than side one, but overall i think the mix is a pretty good musical representation of both countries.

title taken from bragi olaffson's (sugarcubes bassist) poem of the same name. trades always welcome. japan, up next.

i can't wait to see your japan mix, because this one looks like a lotta fun, a lotta breadth.
