Comment:
Unlike my last several mixed-genre mixes and nearly all of my single-artist mixes, this two-disc anthology is the product of months of concentrated listening and track gathering. Although I've always liked Daniel well enough (in a passing kind of way), I freely admit that my interest in him was totally galvanized by my viewing (with Mark P, to boot) of The Devil & Daniel Johnston last summer. Suddenly songs like "Some Things Last a Long Time" (my favorite), "Peek a Boo" and "Casper the Friendly Ghost" began lodging themselves in my brain with no signs of letting go six months later. This mix is the result of this minor-league obsession/fixation (which does not come close to holding a candle to Daniel's fixation on his beloved Laurie, who inspired nearly every song above and on his endless stream of cassette and CD releases). I'm still missing one Johnston disc--White Magic, a recent compilation of previously unreleased cassette-era work--so this could potentially undergo one revision, but I sincerely doubt it. Last tracks cut (there were honestly so many in contention that this could have been a triple-disc set, but even *I* would have a hard time sitting through a full 240 minutes of Daniel in succession): "King Kong," "Going Down," "Love Not Dead," "I Know What I Want," "An Idiot's End," "I'd Like to Say Goodbye," "Sad Sac + Tarzan," "Lennon Song," "You Hurt Me," "Melody," "I Save Cigarette Butts," "Scattered Like Birds," "Rock 'n ' Roll/Ega," "Scrambled Eggs" and "No More Pushing Joe Around."Feedback:
A strange genius, not of this world . . . but there's something in his music that speaks even to us earthlings.
Yeah, that movie had a similar effect on me, though not to the extent of producing results like this, but anyway it did put D.J. in context for me & I've been listening to more & more of him - & yet there are lots on here I still havben't heard . But you'll realize I'm not a true Johnstonian when I say I still prefer Kathy McCarty's cover versions . . .

i was just reading about this fellow last week, though i can't claim to have heard much of anything he's done. seems interesting enough though -- okay, very interesting...
Intriguing. I have seen the name but not sure if I have heard anything of his. It's of to Rhapsody I go....
Hell of a documentary, wasn't it. Still have alot of his discs to pour over, but they really do suck you in. This is a tremendous effort Mr. Conroy.
Great tribute...I have to agree with joey de vivre word for word!
Amazing. And a frightening coincidence, as I rented the movie just this past weekend and, like you, walked out with a burning desire to pick up some of his back catalog and make a mix. Which I'll skip doing if I can rope you into a trade.
Like others, I often prefer other artists' DJ covers to the originals (particularly Yo La Tengo's "Speeding Motorcycle," the Reivers' "Walking the Cow," and the Katy McCarty album) -- though I feel the same way about Bob Dylan, for what that's worth. But Artistic Vice is an outstanding album, and a lot of these are pretty compelling when you're in the mood.
As for the movie, it's really a must-see, not so much as an insight into the art itself as for its commentary on mental illness (much like the R. Crumb movie from a couple years back). Actually, a pretty good year for rock documentaries -- the Luna movie, while imperfect (and a tad boring) is an alarmingly eye-opening look inside the world of a touring just-shy-of-popular rock band. Really takes the romance out of the rock dream.

Scares the crap out of me does this man!
Excellent work here, Rob - you argue the case for "This House Believes That Daniel Johnston Is Amazing" very well indeed! I like your Jad Fair inclusions in particular and I agree with all the comments below about the strange magnetism that D.J. has. And I STILL haven't seen that damn film! Last week I flicked over to a film channel and saw that it was just finishing...was kicking myself. But I will, definitely. Great work. (PS: if this could make its way into the pile for our trade, I'd definitely drop in another couple in return! :) )
More than a single-artist mix, it's an anthology. Great stuff Rob.
A labour of love, no doubt. And what an amazing end product. I bow to you and this incredible anthology.
I can handle the guy in small doses, but this thing would probably kill me! still haven't seen the movie, but it's definitely on my list. in fact, this impressive compilation (along with song titles like "I Save Cigarette Butts," "Ain't No Woman Gonna Make a George Jones Outta Me" and "Some Things Last a Long Time") have me moving the movie to the top of my queue.
I only have a handful of his tracks but love them- the movie was on tv here the other day (think the same showing Siobhan missed) and it was terrific stuff indeed. I'd love a copy of this if you could Rob!
Wow, this looks fantastic, Rob. I still have the movie (which I've been meaning to watch together with this boy I work with for months, but somehow we never get around to it. current status: "January is kind of busy, let's do this next month!") as well a significant percentage of his back catalogue to look forward to, so I'm not really all that qualified to comment, but as far as I can tell, great selections here.
i know nothing 'bout him but i do want to see the movie.
It needs a creepy cover :D
Wow. Sorry I missed this one Rob. That movie had a huge impact on me as well. I made my own DJ anthology based on stuff I had and acquired not long after seeing the biopic. "The Story of an Artist" still breaks my heart.
