Comment:

This is a repost of my mix of songs from the 4 CD set entitled "Hitsville USA - The Motown Collection - 1959-1971". All of the songs on that collection were presented in mono (even if the original charted hit was in stereo). I posted this mix before on 8/13/06, and used the mono mixes off of the 4 cd set. locovinagre complained that I was posting an all mono mix and even called me lazy (although he also said that it was a groovy mix). Well I thought it was a good mix, but decided it was worth reposting it with stereo presentations of the songs. This is my attempt to do that. Unfortunately, it looks like as much as seven songs were recorded originally in mono (tracks 1, 3, 5, 8, 18, 19 & 20). If anybody has a stereo version of any one of the mono songs used here, please let me know. I'm supplying this mix in a zip file of 108 megs (just click on the first song title to download). The two chart numbers given reflect the Pop & then the R&B rankings.

As this is a Motown selection, musical quality is already assured. The choices here are universally excellent. The stereo/mono debate however, is a thorny old thing, not unlike that vinyl/digital chestnut. I would prefer the stereo versions, for reasons that would probably not stand up to intelligent scrutiny. Nonetheless, That's my choice. Therefore, this "re-working" is the one for me. Cheers Joe.

"The two chart numbers given reflect the Pop & then the R&B rankings." And that of course was the genius of Motown, that they had appeal to both of those fan bases.

Great collection here. Thanks Joe.
