Comment:
A bit of a labour of love, this, with labour being the operative word. : )The Norwegian soprano saxophonist Jan Garbarek has arguably one of the most recognizable sounds in all of jazz, indeed, all of music, as 'jazz' is perhaps not the best category to place him. His jazz chops are indisputable when given a listen to his earlier recordings, in particular, but his reputation was built on latter albums, starting with Dis in 1976. His keening, soaring-above-fjords sound has been described as "icy" and defining of the record label he's remained with his entire career, Manfred Eicher's ECM Records. Indeed, Garbarek's sound, while entirely his own, has been nonetheless controversial, oftentimes tagged "new agey," even syrupy (the unctuous Kenny G owes his career to the immensely more talented Garbarek). But don't let that put you off. While Garbarek might be an acquired taste (as reception to this will no doubt attest), I hope this not-quite-definitive collection will show he's not just a one note wonder. His oeuvre is diverse and eclectic, and he's done his fair share of experimenting along the way, as his dabbling with vocalists (2, 12, 14, 18, 19, 21, 24), for example, has shown.
This is a mostly chronological mix, although there's an attempt in the first five tracks to give an off-the-bat overview.

(Title is from the Percy Bysshe Shelley poem, Lines Written Among the Euganean Hills).
P.S.
This mix was inspired by the many (the chuggin-in-the-face-of-it-all Dom, for one) who commented on my last mix. Cheers, all.
Feedback:
Utterly and completly unknown to me. But I'm inspired to hunt him down, just because, well, you're you . . .
Looks intriguing. I wanted to get my copy of Twelve Moons from the CD shelf for the first time in ages the other day after listening to the last installment of the Gallimaufry-series and enjoying the Garbarek track on there a lot more than I'd expected, but this looks better. I'd definitely be interested in a download link.
Well, you've certainly got my attention. I am unfamiliar with him, but plan on rectifying that immediately.
I love Jan Garbarek! I've put him on a mix in the past, and he certainly has some beautiful songs and sounds.
Looking forward to this Edward as, despite the comparison to Kenny G., the Afric Pepperbird track in Gallimaufry #12 is definitely not elevator music.
Nice!
I'm a big fan of Jan. Twelve Moons, Paths-Prints and Visible World are amongst my favorites, and tracks from each have factored heavily into my ambient excursions along the way. The fact that Bill Frisell & Eberhard Weber show up in his ensembles is an added bonus.

I used to collect these albums. Never really got sold on them. But never ever questioned their worthiness. Comparisons to Kenny G?!? What a horrible thing. Comparisons to Kenny G are never a good thing.
actually, comparisons to Kenny G are almost always a good thing, since he makes everything else look/sound so appealing. Put this one on at work to start the day (and nearly carry us to noon!) and discovered my new colleague is a big Jan Garbarek fan. a very pleasant listen w/ lots of highlights. thanks for sharing it, Leif Averageson.
