Comment:
Alice Coltrane, wife until his death in 1967 to the great tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, died on Jan. 12. Ms. Coltrane was no in-the-shadow-of figure (or at least as stand-alone as one can be next to genius), and carved out a career (if not as prominent or as influential as her husband's) of importance in the world of jazz. She brought the harp into a jazz setting, for one (although she was not the first to do so -- Dorothy Ashby, to my knowledge, was the first), and captured the spiritual pulse and/or questing of 60s flower children by embracing and incorporating eastern music into her work (although she was certainly not the first jazz musician to explore such colourings). (Coltrane even put her money where her chakras were by opening an ashram in California (natch) in 1975 (adopting the Hindu name Swamini Turiyasangitananda -- Turiya for short), and in 1978 mostly abandoning music (save a few obscure spiritually-tinged cds -- see: Glorious Chants above) until the late 90s.This collection includes samples from most of her recorded, post-Coltrane (she joined the quartet after McCoy Tyner's departure in 1965) output, as well as three bonus tracks with John Coltrane, Carlos Santana and Charlie Haden. With the exception of Shiva-Loka & Gospel Trane, I've tried not to duplicate any tracks from either the Priceless Jazz: Alice Coltrane or The Impulse Story: Alice Coltrane cds, the only two comps, to my knowledge, on the market. Besides, this is much better value for your money! ; )

Feedback:
What sad news. Definitely someone I would have loved to hear perform live. I've been able to get into her sound in a way I've never been able to with Mr. Trane.
Cooler than many will know.
I confess I'm not at all familiar with her work, but by your description alone it sounds interesting and, unfortunately, yet another in the long line of those I've discovered too late.
Great tribute.
Was completely unaware Coltrane's wife was a jazz harpist. Very interesting stuff. An education, as usual. Thanks very much.
Excellent value for my money indeed! I have to admit to being completely unfamiliar with her work, so I have nothing insightful to add, but I'm in the middle of giving this a listen right now and enjoying it quite a bit.
Dying's a crying shame, isn't it? But I thought Nina Simone was the official "high priestess"? Anyway nice one. I've gotten really into lady coltrane over the past seven years or so. The only one of my favorites absent here is "My Favorite Things", but I wouldn't miss it amongst all these other gems.
You've certainly piqued my interest here.
One of the true greats, for sure. Lovely, lovely tribute you've put together here.
RIP, Alice. A magnificent memorial.
Having not really paid attention to her work, after listening to this I wish I had sooner. Most excellent value! And a great tribute mix. Thanks for the education..
Wonder where she is now... lovely tribute to an enlightening force.
