Comment:

This mix contains tunes numbering ten for 1937, twelve for 1938, and five for 1939 (breakdown similar to my first mix).

For what was in the news in 1938: The March of Dimes was established by FDR, Benny Goodman & his Orchestra become the first jazz musicians to headline a concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC, Adolf Hitler gains direct control of the German military and removes political and military leaders who oppose him, oil discovered in Saudi Arabia, first Superman comic issued, Howard Hughes sets a new record by flying around the world in 91 hours, The New England Hurricane of 1938 kills 600, Winston Churchill calls upon America and Western Europe to prepare to resist Hitler militarily (the next year the US declares it's neutrality while Canada declares war), minimum wage established in the US, Orson Welles "The War of The Worlds" broadcast, Kate Smith sings "God Bless America" for the first time on radio, the Holocaust begins in Germany, and the ballpoint pen is patented.

Joe, you are THE man. These two mixes are really great. Some stuff that both me and my 90 year old Father can enjoy together. He never tires telling people that he met Fats Waller during the 30s. Also, I never tire of hearing that 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. Bravo for the links, as I have a suspicion that a lot of this might be available only on vinyl.

another great dose from a decade that's sadly under-represented at AotM. track 24 is a favorite from my grandma's set of Readers Digest LPs, and I dig the Duke's "Caravan" and the Guy Lombardo take on one of my favorite hits by The Andrews Sisters. superb.
