For what was in the news in 1939 (thanks to Wikipedia)... Batman introduced in Detective Comics, Hewlett-Packard is founded, two earthquakes kill around 30,000 each in Chile & Turkey, Mohandas Gandi begins fasting to protest social inequality within India, Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" is first published, the New York World's Fair opens, Germany & Italy form "Pact of Steel", National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum opens in Cooperstown, NY, the Wizard of Oz premiers at the Capitol Theater in NYC, successful flight of first jet-powered aircraft, WWII begins in Europe, Albert Einstein urges FDR to develop the atomic bomb, and "Gone with the Wind" premiers at Loews Grand Theater in Atlanta.

Value of the dollar back then: Cost to mail a letter = 3 cents, a loaf of bread = 8 cents, a gallon of gasoline = 19 cents, a gallon of milk = 49 cents, one of those new fangled televisions = $600, a new car = $750, a new house = $6,400, and a years salary (avg) = $1,850. The stock market averaged around 150 that year.

Must echo the others in thanking you for putting these together and sharing them. the historical overviews and pictures alone are really great - but then there's music! "Thanks For the Memory," "They Say," "Deep Purple," "Comes Love"... all favorites here, and I've always had a soft spot for the Ink Spots. but best of all is that incredible live recording of "Jeepers Creepers" w/ so many amazing voices. this was a thrill to listen to.
