JE T'AIME...MOI NON PLUS (Serge Gainsbourg)

In the winter of 67 in Paris Gainsbourg & Bardot squeezed themselves into a recording booth and recorded one of the most erotic songs ever written. Gainsbourg had become involved with BB during her estrangement from then husband Gunther Sachs and Je t'aime was a declaration of his love. Rumours that JTM was nothing more than an aural verite killed JTM before release. BB, who disliked scandal and about to make a movie in Spain, wrote to G asking that he not release it. With BB's ineveitable departure and the affair drawing to a close, G reluctantly agreed.

When Jane Birkin was asked to re-record Je T'aime she refused. Though jealous of what did or didn't happen in the sound booth with BB, she believed that she was incapable of doing the song justice. Recorded in London in separate booths, JB's orgasmic moans were choreographed down to the milli second by G waving frantically at her from his booth. Back in Paris, the head of Phillips heard a hit & JTM was released in a plastic cover on which was written 'Over 21's Only.'

Banned in Italy - the head of phonogram received a 2 month suspended sentence, JTM was eventually smuggled back into the country inside Maria Callas sleeves. Spain & Sweden followed suite. In the US JTM received limited airplay and foundered at 69! Despite a BBC ban, JTM reached no 2 before being withdrawn from the Fontanna catologue. An instrumental version by Sounds Nice was released with a new title 'Love At First Sight' and charted. Major-Minor, an independent label, re-released JTM and it became the first european single to hit no 1. And remained in the UK charts for 34 weeks.

In 1986 BB gave G permission to release the record of their love. Sadly, BB, though a fanatical animal right's capaigner, is considered a disgace in her native country for her public support of the French National Front leader Le Penn. The irony is Serge Gainsbourg as a Jew was forced to wear a yellow star during the Nazi Occupation of France.
