Comment:

Although I've done 3 Bond & Beyond mixes before, this mix is devoted to 007, in particular the Connery era. Apart from Never Say Never Again, all Connery films are represented. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate in my collection any material that covered You Only Live Twice - I know both Bjork & Coldplay covered it - and for the sake of completion I used the original Nancy Sinatra title track. A cheat, I hope you'll forgive. I hope, too, you'll forgive me doubling up on artists and compilations employed. Versions of The Bond theme by both John Zorn & Moby were cut from the running order in favour of versions created in the 60's. The Masters Of The Groove Meets Dr. No album was also considered, but rejected due to it's lengthy work outs. Contemporary covers by various philharmonics or orchestras have also been rejected due to their proximity in sound & arrangements to the original soundtracks. Both Dr. No & the James Bond theme was of course written by Monty Norman so the inclusion of The John Barry 7 must be considered a cover.

With the global success of Bond, labels rushed out Bond inspired albums e.g. `Bedside Bond' & `Music To Read James Bond By'. Albums like these included original versions & covers of both John Barry & Monty Norman as well as imagined themes for Bond novels still awaiting movie treatments. Surprisingly the James Bond theme, though popular amongst the jazz & easy fraternity, was not a staple of the US or UK guitar scene who instead chose to work the themes from Batman or The Green Hornet .

I am unable to track down some of the dates but I imagine all relevant tracks were composed and recorded with Connery in mind. The David Lloyd tracks might have been recorded after George Lazenby but most definitely prior to Roger Moore and originally appeared on the album 007. The Claudia Vita is a sexploitation track and, as far as I know, has nothing to do with James Bond but I can't believe the title is mere coincidence. The Des Champ tracks originally appeared on `Bedside Bond.' Other artists like Leroy Holmes & Elliott Fischer originally appeared on `Music To Spy By', `Music To Read James Bond By' & `Bang Bang.' Shaken & Stirred was a David Arnold project of Bond covers by various artists. Pussy 007 is a various artist tribute to the Bond concept and contains just one Barry cover. The Sounds Orchestral track though titled kissy suzuki is in fact a cover of From Russia With Love with sound affects. All tracks I suspect can be downloaded if you are interested in compiling this mix for yourself.

I've got a lovely version of You Only Live Twice by the Angelica Project which would've fitted nicely onto this mix. I know you're not one for downloading but if you want a lik to it I could provide. Great Mix btw.

Another very Dom-like installment that seems as tremendous as ever. I have a soft spot for Connery as Bond, as well, although Bond in general has never meant a ton to me...

So glad you picked that closer! This is absolutely top-notch; all your choices are very fitting and a refreshing change from the only Bond-related thing I have, which is a compilation of the themes (good as many of those are). Glad to see Nancy Sinatra on here though, as that's possibly my favourite. Excellent Jackie Mittoo pick too.
