Comment:
This is by no means definitive (I'm not a massive Gouldman-Stewart-Godley-Creme fan), but it is a collection of my favorite 10cc songs from their prime period (i.e., the 1970s stretch where all four members were actively involved in the band). (Yes, Hotlegs did not include Graham Gouldman, but three out of four ain't bad and "Neanderthal Man" is easily one of my couple favorite 10cc-related tracks.) At their best, 10cc combined elements of Steely Dan, Sparks and the Bonzo Dog Band; at their worst, they were unnecessarily silly and, well, kind of boring (IMHO). Last tracks cut: "Art for Art's Sake," "I'm Mandy Fly Me," "Rock and Roll Lullaby," "The Sacro-iliac," "Good News," and "Headline Hustler."Feedback:
Wonderfully nostalgic for me. I've actually worked with these guys. Top geezers, and most entertaining. Furthermore, Rubber Bullets is a guilty favourite of mine. You've won me over :)
Well, "Dreadlock Holiday" is a personal favorite of mine, but it does not surprise me that it is not one of yours. I'll be needin this, good sir.
Rubber Bullets was the second single I ever bought and can't resist saying, "You've got to be joking man...." Nah so pleased you never included it, however, I'd have liked to have seen 'The Dean His Daughter & Me." (whatever the song's actually called ?)
This is one of those bands (I'd put XTC on the list as well) that, on paper, sounds like everything I'd want in a pop band -- clever, catchy, nuanced. Yet I've never taken the tumble for them. I know there early work has been reissued lately, and I keep thinking I should give it a shot, but haven't gotten around to it. Maybe I'll just add this to my "want list" next time you & I do some sharing.
nice band
I have much to learn about these chaps. This looks like a great place to start.
Like the best of ELO, I know all these songs from way back, but for whatever reason just never was able to click with despite their shiny pop pedigree. I've since reconsidered Jeff Lynne's work so I should probably give this one a go.
If I may indulge myself...I walked into one of those late '70's vinyl shops (back in the late '70's, of course), where they sold tapastries and black light art. There, I found a huge sign, saying "All soundtracks $1!!"It may have had 3 !!!'s. I forget. So, I started digging. There, I found Tangerine Dream's soundtrack for Sorcerer as well as The Original Soundtrack by 10cc.I recall very clearly asking myself if I should alert the staff that The Orignal Soundtrack was not a movie soundtrack at all. When I approached the fellow at the counter, I held up the elpee and said, "Excuse me, sir?"The fellow was one of those idiots that Jack Black's character is based on in High Fidelity, except Jack is funny and he was just rude.Rude to the point of Free Range Rude, dinner for Hannibal.Long story, but I bought it for $1 (!!!!) and thought that #10 was one of the most complete rock operas every recorded, better by far than A Quick One (While He's Away) by The Who.#11 is what most pop artists even now only wish they could achieve.Nice mix! (Did I really have to say that?)Don't give a damn/don't give a hoot/just gotta keep on/makin' that loot./Chauffer driven!
Cool. Yeah, track 11 is awesome.
Geez, are we all getting old? I remember "I'm Not In Love" being an fm radio staple back in the mid-70's, and I used to find it absolutely horrifying and quickly change the channel. (That was, of course, back in the days, when there was not only one decent rock station, but several, before Clear Channel killed radio.) Yet now I can listen to the same song as a production masterpiece... and it looks like others aren't afraid to confess their enjoyment of it as well.
Similarly, though you seem to have avoided the later work of the band once they had splintered, I have to confess that the single "Things We Do For Love" is still one of the catchiest things ever written, one of those guilty pleasures that I don't necessarily play voluntarily (I have it on some 70s anthology), but if it comes on I need to hear it out.

Yay, now I can figure out the right way to sing "I'm Not in Love" at karaoke!
Sacro-Iliac is a personal favourite. They also set up Stockport's Strawberry Studios, a stone's throw from where I was born, and Joy Division went on to record Unknown Pleasures there.
Cool. "I'm Not In Love" sounded like nothing else on the radio when it came out in the early 70s -- and nothing has sounded like it since. I don't own any 10cc albums/CDs, but I do have that Strawberry Studios compilation, which I quite like. Is it safe to assume you have it as well?
A fine band. I'm Not In Love is a bona-fide classic. Love Donna & rubber Bullets also.
Ooh, very cool indeed! I only own 1 10CC record, a compilation - I'm not actually sure where I got it, but I like it even though I haven't listened to it enough. That, and this mix, tell me I have much to learn about the band and this looks like a very carefully put together collection of tracks. I also really like your description of how 10cc sounded at their best - I think you hit the nail on the head!
I'm with Mark P. "Dreadlock Holiday" should be here.
