The melding of electric rock and funk and soul elements to jazz, fusion has been as controversial as it's been popular. On the heels of Miles Davis' classic [i]Bitches Brew[/i], a number of his sidemen decided to take the sound even further. Guitarist John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra actually made it to the Top 20 on the [i]Billboard[/i] Pop Albums chart with [i]Birds of Fire[/i], whose title track is heard here. And check out the way Carlos Santana and McLaughlin rocked out John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme."
