Comment:
By 1960 the US western was in decline. Ever popular in europe, Spain, Italy & Germany ventured into the genre. With few exceptions, these home-grown films were badly dubbed Hollywood B immitations and failed at the box office.. Fast forward to 1964 and an unknown Italian director named Sergio Leone was given $200,000, some left over film and asked to make a film. The script was based on Kurosowa's Yojimbo, the actor was C Eastwood & the composer E Morricone. The resulting film - A Fistfull Of Dollars became the blueprint for the genre known as The Spaghetti Western.Although predominantly Italian, Spag is a generic term for most european westerns. Most were shot in Almeria, the desert region of Spain. The Germans favoured Yugoslavia. Other locations included Argentina, South Africa & of course The USA. Via Spaghetti, many US B-Movie stars like Lee Van Cleef found sudden fame in Europe.
Such was the importance of music to Spag, Sergio Leone often played Morricone's music over the speaker system while directing. Although Mor is seen as the composer who definded the sound associated with Spaghetti, there were many other great Italian composers who contributed to the genre including Francesco De Massi, Piero Piccioni & Luis Bacalov.
In Germany the western thrived through the novels of 19th C novelist Karl May whose creation Winnetou, the loyal Indian Scout was adapted for the screen. Kraut Westerns (as they were known) were popular before the spaghetti. East German westerns begun shooting in the early 60's and were apparently inspired by the cold war. Unsurprisingly, the Indians were noble & peace loving and the cowboys sadistic killers. ASM have produced 3 volumes that collect the best of these East German soundtracks.
The sword & sandal genre which the spag had replaced was in turn replaced by the martial arts movie.
This mix then covers the period from 1963-78. All tracks are the original versions released on the soundtracks or were recorded for the movie and remained unreleased or released in alternative versions. 11 tracks were chosen from `Spag Wstrns', a 7 disc set released in 3 volumes by DGR that contains over 200 tracks representing over a 100 movies. You might believe this set would be definitive but it does not include for instance The Dollars Trilogy or westerns released on the Cam label.
Feedback:
Scholarly stuff Dom. I like a good Spag myself. Pleased to see Django represented here. Looks well worth the effort that's clearly gone in to this.
Blimey !
not my genre of music or movie but i admire the scholarship and effort put into this.
was just meandering through the AotM art gallery and this thing popped out and pistol-whipped me. excellent. and I bet the music is tops too, though I have only my instincts to rely on.
Fantastic, I wish I had this
Wow! Now this, as I only know Morricone & Jodorowsky from the above, I would love to hear. Stunning work (again!) Dom.
Wonderful.
Fantastic. I can't think of anyone with whom I'm acquainted that I'd rather see compile a spaghetti western mix...
Outstanding! Love this stuff.
A little frightening that the 7 disc set isn't definitive. Nice work Dom.
Most excellent. Love this stuff.
spaghetti with meatballs!!!
Ha, this is soo good.
Undeniable.
Hey.., blondie..! Sergio, Lee Van, Clint, et al...forever. Great distillation Dom! Sangria.
(Did you leave out the theme to Fistfull of Travelers Cheques intentionally?)
Mmmmmm... spaghetti. Super duper!! Your record collection is worth its weight in gold.
While I'm not at all familliar with many of these artists or songs. I Love the genre of film and am well acquainted with the sound. I'm sure this is as great as it looks.
Mighty, mighty stuff.
Very ambitious . . . I bet this sounds terrific.
An amazing mixer remains at the top of his game. Your mixes are untouchable.
This is just wonderful - one of your best yet imho! As always I appreciate the Morricone representation and like your Lavagnino choices too. God, I wish I had your record collection.
Wow...just wow.
Wow, indeed.
