The dissecting and interconnecting threads that weave through jazz both blossomed and came to a bit of a nadir in the 70s, with funk and disco both complimenting and perverting the music, depending on your taste for funk and disco. As with the 60s, my goal was to present as wide a cross-section as possible, with as many DIFFERENT performers as possible (all the while trying not to repeat from the previous decade -- Miles and Hancock are the only repeating players from the 60s, and they'll likely show up in the 50s and 80s installments, too!). Back to the 50s next -- a massive decade that'll likely take me a bit longer to pull together.
Feedback:
Maybe I like more '70s jazz than I thought. I'll have to check out your downloads....
Wonderfully enlightening!
This is steller. I'm finally all the way through the 60's so I'll need to be tackling this soon. Thanx for all this.
You really are impossible to keep up with! And I really have some gaps in my musical knowledge to fill! Looks excellent, as far as I can tell, and I'm looking forward to check this out.
Another mix spiraling towards greatness. Yet another on my listening queue.
Huge. Thankyou for the time & effort involved in compiling & uploading this series. Lots to learn from it...
Hopefully, I will have the storage cleared from the hard drive (currently at scary near full levels) so I can download this massive and intensive survey.Outstanding!
Educational! :D
Looks great as usual, Though I find most jazz to be a little spotty at best towards the end of the 70's, Looks like there is plenty Iv'e overlooked
Massive, indeed!! One question: to me, part of the challenge of AOTM is boiling down the possibilities to a worthy mix within a certain confine -- 72-minute CD or a 60-minute cassette. Maybe the idea of a time constraint isn't pertinent anymore, or is this is a 4-cassette collection?
Obviously, Steve, you don't mind being restricted to such a limited "challenge". I see the challenge of making mixes to be multi-pronged, with the purpose changing with each mix. The 'point' of these (60s, 70s, etc. jazz mixes) are to give folks as broad and intro to jazz as possible. The point to my next mix -- I hope -- will be something completely different.
Wonderful overview of a neglected decade. The Emergency, Mahavishnu, Abrams, Dickerson/Davis, Air, Ulmer and Blythe are particular favorites. I've been out of the loop and missed your sweep through the 60s. I'll correct that oversight. Splendid, just splendid.
Sad to say I missed out on the downloads for this tour de force from the '70s. I wasn't born too late but did join (aotm) too late. If you still have this around the computer, I would do back flips to snag these tracks.
