Comment:

SwankLove, pt. 11. Thanks to Nick Falivena for the Misha Mengelberg track. Yes, as much as I loathe Mark Knopfler and his band, I've always had a weakness for that bittersweet near-classic; and yes, there's both a sincere and postmodern element to my finishing the mix with the Morrissey favorite. Title by Mr. Ray Davies.

nothing like the beach boys, the smiths, and the kinks to tell her exactly how you feel!

a real fave kinks song here. and nothing says love like the mummies. that dire straits song is really good - why loathe mark k? he's a great guitar player. i'm not into him that much, but he's really first rate and pretty soulful as a player. and come on, 'sultans of swing' was a real treat when it came out - i played that single to learn those riffs over and over again. plus, his work with chet atkins rules.

Quite nice all around. And as I've noted before when you've harped on Dire Straits -- it's not a band I should like, and certainly not something I ever choose as foreground music, but many is the Sunday morning when I enjoy having Making Movies bubbling quietly in the background. Besides, if you need to rationalize it, then you need to explain the inclusion of "Our House" as well -- yet it's also an irrefutable guilty pleasure.
The first minute of "100,000 Fireflies" remains one of those things that never gets unstuck from my mind (though I'm marginally more favorably inclined towards the Superchunk version).

I'm with ya on Romeo & Juliet. I got into a heated debate with an even bigger music snob than me ;) over a beer a few months back on that very subject. Sensational closing 6 as well.

is that smiths closer too obvious for a rob conroy mix? absolutely not -- it's a bloody classic. love the r.e.m., 'mats, beatles, beach boys, mag fields, dylan & kinks lots too, among the other gems scattered about. looks fantastic rob...

Brimful of classic tunes. I've always liked that CSN&Y song and that Smiths' tune still gives me chills after a hundred listens. So does that Magnetic Fields' song, come to think of it.

your heart is on your sleeve, Rob. Bee Gees, Sarah Vaughan, Flamingos and Smiths are ones I'm familiar with and love the most. "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" is still one of the best love songs ever, no matter how often I hear it. beautiful.

Part 11? I'm severely impressed! As I am by the whole mix itself - as ever you've made top-drawer choices and managed to stamp the whole thing with your own personality. I've always had a soft spot for that REM track - lovely.

Mister Rob, do you loathe Dire Straits like I loathe surprises and company over to the house? This kinda reminds me of a lost episode of TOTP2C. Nice stuff here!!!
