Comment:
Wanda Jackson: (Maverick, Queen Of Rock-a-Billy, The female Elvis, raven-haired, Heavy-lidded beauty) The salacious rockabilly that came out of Jackson's mouth in the late 50's was unlike any that had been heard of before from a female rock and roll singer. Sure there were contemporaries like The Collins Kids and Janis Martin but Wanda sang about shakin' chickens in the middle of the room with a raw, bluesy growl that was ahead of its time. The choruses were punched with exhilarating falsetto whoops more suitable for orgies than your average 50's teenage party. A hard driving combo consisting of the likes of Roy Clark, Joe Maphis, Buck Owens, and "the black Jerry Lee Lewis"--Big Al Downing backed her. Listen to "Let's Have a Party", "Mean, Mean, Man," or "Fujiyama Mama", (some of which are self-penned) and you picture Jackson as a whiskey soaked, hell-raiser, but nothing is further from the truth. She was a milk-drinking girl from Oklahoma.Like her male counterpart--Elvis, she possessed that raw sensuality coupled with a beguiling "awshucksiness" Her only song to chart in the USA was "Lets Have a Party", but one listen to the other great singles, it is fair to say she is not only the greatest female rockabilly singer but one of the best rockabilly singers period. "Fujiyama Mama" was a big hit in Japan and considering it was only a dozen years after WWII, the Japanese didn't listen to the lyrics very closely. Ironically the song was too hot for American stations to play in more ways than one. By the early sixties Wanda had transitioned herself into a country singer and then a gospel singer. The tape consists of Jackson's work including two of her country songs, contemporaries--Janis Martin and The Collins Kids, as well as artists who invoke the attitude and/or sound generated by the "shake it, bake it, naked"sounds. of Wanda Jackson.Feedback:
