Comment:

A predominately jazz infected vibe from the movies & TV of the 50's starring Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, James Dean, Brigitte Bardot, Jean Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Susan Hayward, Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Anouk Aime, James Stewart etc and featuring jazz players like Chet Baker, Bud Shank & Shelley Manne.

To the best of my knowledge, all tracks are scourced from the original soundtracks - a few question marks appear on RCA's 1958 release of Alex North's North of Hollywood which is either a compilation of prior releases or new recordings. Rebel Without A Cause is lifted from the 1957 CBS release `A Tribute To James Dean' and according to Soundtrack Collector is the first release.

Some of you may notice that not one UK composer appears in this mix - one reason for this is a lack of soundtracks. The reason for this I suspect is that (a) many of the scores have been lost & (b) UK composers were late or uneager to embrace either jazz or rock'n'roll into their repetoire and continued to draw their inspiration from the classics. This is not to infer that UK film music of the period was redundant, Sir Malcolm Arnold, for instance, was it's most prolific composer and created many memorable scores including The Belles of St. Trinnians and Bridge Over The River Kwai. The arrival of John Barry marked a change and his debut score Beat Girl (1960) was in fact the very first UK soundtrack to be released on LP.

For those of you who wish to create their own copy, I suspect all of these tracks are available from your nearest download station.

Dom, you do great stuff, but I'm always stymied (and sometimes alfalfaed - Little Rascals/Our Gang joke) trying to find the tracks to recreate your works of art. Thanks for submitting one where I'll be able to download the tracks, even if I have to pay for them.

Another mix that Dom-inates. Really don't know much here to comment on, other to say that I'm positive it's fantastic and the cover is brilliant.

incredible, Dom. I love the music in several of these films, especially Touch of Evil. hope a volume from the '60s is in the works.
