Comment:

This is the second time I have posted this mix, but now it is "new and improved". Quite a few theme songs for the old Gringo Ranchero here and I have gone through many versions of this (and plan to put a few up here). Distinctly non-bilingual mix, but this is the Gringo en MTxico theme, others will vary. On to the tracks: Never was kismet more evident than hearing the Carlos/Willie track for the first time while landing in St. Louis after my second stay in MTxico at 19. When I got off the plane, I started to realize, while drifting through my tape collection, I began to see kindred spirits everywhere (mostly Bob & Jimmy, Neil and the aforementioned Havana Moon album). Having been born in Panamß and then going to MTxico at 16, my soul had come home. My Old School was on the very first mix so I had to keep it here, besides it always referenced my idea that I would not go back to the Universidad Aut=noma de Guadalajara, though of course I ended up doing six years and a Maestrfa there, pues ni modo. Then the Abbey Road songs, of course Sun King always worked "here" but I always used the sexual perversion of PP to bridge to JP which was found before Caribbean Wind on the tape of Biograph I had ('scuse the run-on). I figured here that I had no place for the pizza hippie pop of Nirvana and Wall of Voodoo but between the Abbey Road songs rather than amidst all the Wood Hippie/Redneck anthems. Other than that, I just went for Mini-themes. I was hoping to bookend with the TTs (Let's Go & Adi=s), but then I was going to bookend with Beck's diez mil pesos and the LL track, but then I realized Beck blatantly ripped off Dylan note for note (Good thing Bob never stole anybody's tune, eh?). Hey, I was already turned off by Beck's scientological ways, but religion is one thing, íla m·sica lo es todo! I tried to also make some mini-themes (goofy songs, outlaws, marriage, beaches) without being too cheezy or hung-up on the process. I had to include a Nacho Libre song though Beck pissed me off, you really have to be a Gabacho Mexicano to appreciate that flick. Hasta pronto...
