Comment:

The majority of these tracks were recorded for use in the commercial media as a cheap alternative to commisioning specific work from composers. Composers could often produce 2 albums in a month - and for different libraries. Despite the manic turnover, this wasn't the sound of `hacks' - both production standards & execution were of the highest quality. Although many of the composers are relatively unknown outside the industry, big names like John Barry & Ennio Morricone also did their share of sound library work.

Vinyl pressings were often limited to a 100 & when they were dumped into charity shops could be snapped up for pence - now you're talking ú100's. Ironically it was DJ's & samplers who, searching for funky beats etc, discovered or reidiscovered the potential of these sound libraries and played them in clubs, catapulting what was initially viewed as disposable, dated & unwanted into a marketable genre.

Sleeve notes on most compilations are often very basic or non-existant and dates for specific recordings are rare. The nationality of some composers is an instinctive guess & if anyone knows any better then feel free to let me know and I will correct mistakes.

As usual this mix is limited by my collection of compilations - many of which were bought or prompted by the online site MOVIE GROOVES (where you can sample many of these tracks) and to whom this mix is deadicated for tolerating my requests, questions & general enthusiasm.

Mondo cover star is Lt. Gay Ellis (Gabrielle Drake) of TV's `UFO'. Gabrielle of course is the sister of the late Nick Drake. The UFO soundtrack has now been sadly deleted & I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be re-released domestically on CD.

I love your cover art ( always, but extra especially here ). She's one Hot Chick. Must admit I'm a little lost when it comes to the tracks. Although I have heard of Ray Davies & John Barry!
Didn't Syd Dale write the Vision On theme?

This is kick ass. I love this kind of music. I have those "Sound Gallery" comps and they're terrific. (Gotta love John Gregory's "Jaguar"...) I hope this becomes a series!

Sweet! The sound libraries are pretty much an endless well of discovery. So much great funky music.

Amazing ! Great notes, great cover it looks really interesting, although to be honest it could all be a work of (science) fiction for all I know. What I want to know, however, is why all these great soundtracks, great commercial works etc (seemingly) faded away in the '70's. What happened? Surely these genres are not extinct now, just less . . . well . . . good ?

This is a brilliant compilation. I mean fanbloodytastic. What a pity it's on a cassette tape. What a terrible pity, what a damned shame. It's just such a disappointment to me that this excellent mix is only available in the truly outdated and mind-searingly annoying, in this day and age (ha ha), cassette tape format. I know that we all have our preferences and our "individuality".I know it's none of my business even, but I cannot stress this enough, Dom, much as I love and respect you, and lord knows you put together so many wonderful mixes, but, and here is my point - finally! you say -- cassettes are done with, over, finished, kaput, of no further value, they're time has passed -- they were never very good anyway, merely a convenient stopgap. It is 2007; it is time to grasp a sonic recording medium that may do justice to your sterling work. Cassettes are no longer your friend, Dom. They will not serve you well in the future, the past or the present. I beg of you, in the noble cause of musical enjoyment -- cease and desist from the utilisation of this recording format. You may not agree, in fact I'm damned sure you will not (though your reasons will be unfathomable to any but yourself), but if you can just take that first step away from the cassette tape, just one tiny step, Dom, a breath, a pause, a heartbeat, if you can do this, Dom, I believe you will thank me later.I wish you well. Tom
