Comment:
I've been going back and forth on this one for a few months now ever since I got this news at the beginning of the year. This very special episode is dedicated to Eric Smuckler. Eric was one of the first people to contact me via AotM. Having an opinion on everything (near unfailingly positive) our conversations soon moved beyond mix trading to topics of baseball, kid's TV, Asian cinema and what's it like to be the "cool" dad. Of course, music was always the number one topic. Once again, Eric was a fan of everything and for the rare artist that he wasn't he always admitted to having all the albums just in case he suddenly had a change of heart. This mix was drawn from the vastness of what I remember as being Eric's faves; Dolls, Troggs, Costello, Kinks, girl groups, international pop, garage, freakbeat, instrumentals, novelty tunes, dance crazes, soul duets and covers particularly of his beloved Beatles (the stranger the better) and the list goes on for stuff I couldn't fit; Swamp Dogg, Ike & Tina, the rat pack, Alan Sherman, Groucho Marx and of course showtunes especially by his idol Stephen Sondheim. So long Eric, I'm gonna miss your infectious enthusiasm for everything.A nice tribute from people who worked with Eric can be found here.
Feedback:
I'm sorry to hear this story; sounds like he was a great bloke (RIP)Having said that, he has inspired a fantastic looking mix, I hope that he would have approved, or at least had a great conversation about it.11, 13, 14, 17 and 27 are my favorites here . . .
Great mix. Somewhere Eric is listening and appreciating this tribute.
A great tribute, The Howlin Wolf -> Banana Splits -> Runaways -> Troggs run is particularly inspired.
Wow. This looks incredible!
Sorry to hear this sad news and even sorrier to have missed his AotM participation. Great tribute Jim. Makes me regret not not knowing him.
Way out & way cool!
Beautiful, beautiful.
this is a touching tribute -- he sure did have alot of really great taste, & this is a fitting send-off -- ace job
Jesus Christ!!! Why have you not told me that Eric is dead?!? Wow. I guess that explains why the e-mails that I sent him started bouncing a few months ago. This is indeed a great tribute to a truly fantastic guy with tremendous taste in music. Wow. I'm really sad now.
I only knew of Eric as opposed to knowing him, therefore what Curtis said seems most apt. I'm sure the great gig in the sky is all the better for his membership now. Great tribute indeed Jim.
Very sad news. Very sad. This does, though look like a fine tribute to a man you obviously had much respect for. I just love the cover art..
Very nice tribute to Eric. He was my first AOTM trade and I always looked forward to his postings. That I had no idea as to his professional efforts until his obit was posted here by his brother some months ago speaks not only to how truly un-hip I have become, but also to his humility. Great work.
FYI for those who missed it, here is the notice of Eric's passing that appeared on the
AOTM Discussion Board.

Beautiful, both this mix and Eric's colleagues' tribute.
Sad, beautiful and brings much needed perspective to the table. Masterfully compiled and ditto Sam on the cover art.
Beautiful tribute and wonderfully done. Amazing, amazing mix.
Eric showed me the way to appreciate Beatles covers for beauty & absurdity at the same time, & I followed his enthusiams with enthusiasm. A fine tribute.
I was saddened to hear the news that Eric had died. I corresponded with him some time ago and we exchanged some Beatles rarities. We were only starting to venture out into other topics and reading about your correspondence with Eric, I'm sorry I didn't pursue that further. I'm sorry to hear that he is gone.
I am sorry I missed Eric and this mix as well. He was a great one.
Likewise! Let me know if you repost this beauty.
