Comment:
I've got mixed feelings about this guy. On the plus side, it's hard to question the uniqueness of his sound, a blend of ethereal, deeply spiritual indie folk stretched out with ornate orchestral arrangements that bring to mind old showtunes, as if you shuffled some Cat Stevens, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album, and some sort of acid-drenched movie soundtrack. On the downside, the more straightforward acoustic tunes can drag, and the more orchestrated ones can verge into kitsch; plus, the recurring themes -- Christianity and midwestern states (he's two states into what he pledges will be a 50-state musical review) -- can be tiresome. That said, he's recorded some remarkable music (particularly on the Illinoise album), and once you've culled the more tuneful and interesting tracks you end up with an innovative, entertaining 80 minutes. I've included a few choice tracks from his box set of home-produced Christmas ep's, which sound a bit out of place here but are nonetheless great tunes and necessary inclusions.
Feedback:
sigh... like you can even go wrong with Sufjan, some of my favorites are missing but still very good choices
Gotta have "Dear Mr. Supercomputer," but a solid mix. My Sufjan spares the Christmas stuff but is otherwise very similar to yours. Good job, mate.
Agreed - his work can have a certain indie-noodling quality, but does throw up a few impressive tracks. I think you've captured the best stuff here.
