Comment:

As a lover of the 3 minute Pop Song it probably goes without saying I'm a fan of the Eurovision Song contest. Yes, most of the entries year upon year are god awful and cringeworthy to say the least, but it remains essential viewing. The songs will never change the world ( although Nicole gave it a shot with her 1982 entry ) but they certainly get stuck in your head, the opening three on this mix being prime examples. This mix contains 26 of the Winners of the contest including the very first, Lys Assias' 1956 winner. Enjoy!

EUROVISION FACTS

Ireland have won on the most occasions ( 7 times ). France, Luxembourg and the U.k are next on the list with 5 victories. The U.K have come second 15 times!
Famous participants include Sir Cliff Richard (twice ), Olivia Newton John and Katrina & The Waves ( winning in 1997 ) representing the UK. Julio Iglesias represented Spain in 1970. Serge Gainsbourg wrote Luxembourgs 1965 winning entry.

The youngest ever winner of the Eurovision Song contest was 13 year old Sandra Kim from Belgium in 1986.
In 1969 there were four winners: France, Spain, The Netherlands and The United Kingdom. The Scandinavian countries were very upset. They said that the jury-system had failed and they boycotted the 1970 contest.
An unknown Celine Dion represented Swizerland and won in 1988. Her song isn't included here as it's shit.
Thirty-three entries have achieved to score 0 points in a euro final, a record four of them coming from Norway (1963, 1978, 1981, 1997). Spain, Austria, Finland and Switzerland scored the dot on three occasions.. Netherlands and Germany are the only countries having scored zero twice in two consecutive years.
The most covered Eurovision Song Contest song is Domenico Mudugno's `Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu', also known as `Volare'. It came third in 1958.
Most winning songs were performed in English (22 times). French is also popular, with 14 victories. Dutch and Hebrew songs won 3 times each.

NB - The UK entry this year has next to no chance of winning, and is far more likely to finish with nul points. My money's on Sweden or Ukraine...

Ive long since stopped watching for the songs and now tune in solely for Terry Wogan's sublime commentary. Great idea Sam but it is with some trepidation that I click the DL, my dad will be pleased at least, he eats this stuff for breakfast. I am eternally grateful for the Johnny Logan omission. Aren't the Irish the all time champs with 7 victories? Where is My Lovely Horse though? ;)

Oh, my. I have to say the thought of listening to a Eurovision song outside of the contest itself never even occurred to me. I think I'm going to pass up on this opportunity, too - sorry.

Nice collection Sammy, and good notes on the history. Most in the States are unaware of the Eurovision annual event. Come to think of it folks here are pretty unaware of anything that happens in Europe.

A few of these songs did get traction here - Waterloo and A-Ba-Ni-Bi for example, back in the day.

Yes, the whole Eurovision thing is a mystery to us Yanks. Thank God we have American Idol to satisfy our cheesy musical needs. Love the Gall and Teach-In -- and I'm curious to hear what Abba sounds like. One of those obscurities that never made a splash, I guess.

sorry, but did she say "you walk along with your ding-ding-dong?" god, I love this. and I also will not apologize. "I wonna you to show me shooting stars?" this is like an entire galaxy, Sam. loved the Nicole, Jacqueline Boyer and Teach In tunes the most, but the whole thing is fabulous (and I try really hard not to use that word, ever.) let's see... started in '56, which means about 51 years, and there are 26 tracks here... am I the only one hoping there's a vol. 2 already in the works?

Oooh I love eurovision, in fact I have a lot of these tracks already but I always thought putting them all on one mix would be too much.... but maybe not. This mix could be just the thing to get me out of the severe funk I'm currently in. Thanks!

Thanks for the link to your fine compilation. Couldn't help noticing that you skipped over many years from 1987-2001 (out of those 15 years only 3 years, 1989, 1995 & 1998 were chosen and placed at the end of the mix). What's up with that? (you've gotten me curious about how bad songs from the Eurovision song contest actually were during that time). Thanks again Sammy for an entertaining and educational mix!

Crikey, thanks for the reception. OK, firstly, those who think this mix is awful and unlistenable, hey you're probably right. However if you type in 'Eurovision' in the AotM search engine you'll notice a mix of its kind hadn't been attempted before, so I thought why not have a stab at it. It's something different, and that should be welcomed, no?
Answers to questions.
Jake - No Gina G, as she never won the contest the year she represented the UK. No losers to be found here(!)
Joe - The last 20 years have seen some horrific songs win Eurovision. A couple from Ireland, Denmark's 'Olsen Brothers', 'Fly On The Wings Of Love' anyone? Anyone?? And the worst of the lot, Italy's winning entry of 1990 ( a track the Mighty Hoff would've been proud of ). This probably answers tornadoZ' question. Will there be a Vol2. No. But I'll link up the rest for you if you do so wish. Putting all of THEM on a mix would prove too much even for me, Orchid.
So, not the coolest mix ever, though one CAN try too hard. But I'm glad a few found it interesting, educational, enjoyable.. Thankyou. I do stand by the opening 4 here by the way, if they don't get your toes tapping, check your pulse :)

A little behind in my listening but just caught up with this one, and it's another great job by Sammy. Besides a few of the 70s hits that I recall, the Nicole track is quite a sweet one, and "Diva" got the room dancing. Not that we'd make this stuff a regular diet, but it was sure a fun listen.
