Comment:

What is it with Nomates and cassettes
? A real downer on them, he has. And Canada
as well for that matter. So, just to rile him, you've guessed it, I've only gone and posted a mix on Cassette. And all the artists on the mix are.. Canadian. Ho ho.
I expect nothing less than a witty and articulate comment in return Tom. Oh, and maybe a mix or two before the years end?
Thanks to Barry and his Crystal ball for sending me the Malajube track over a year ago ( it's currently all over MTV ), and to Cliff for turning me on to the wonderful High Dials.

My internet provider and my creaking hard drive thanks you. I don't have to download this as I own the whole shebang which I shall dutifully assemble. Unsurprisingly I love it all with the exception of DFA, I just never warmed to them.
I'm 200% Tom on the cassettes thing but what happened to him in Canada? was he mounted by a mountie. Nomates, we need answers?

When I read the title, I thought 'not a genre I know' but having read the listing . . . I am so Canadian Indiepop . . . I've surprised myself . . . oh, and I like it a lot . . . esp Death from above, wolfparade, pink mountaintops and Pony Up!

Wot? No Celine, Alanis, BNL or Gordon? No Leonard, Joni or Neil? Actually, I didn't realize half of these artists were Canucks. Now if I could only figure out how to record on the other side of the CDr....

I'm always in favour of any mix that elicits a comment from Nomates. This one, however, will have to be considered a success even if it fails to bring this about!

Oh ha ha ha and ho ho ho, and if I might make so bold, he he he.Canada sits atop the North American Continent, striving boldly to hold back the Arctic wastes above. A vast, sprawling wonderland of natural beauty and splendour. A nation, divided by culture and a staggering variety of topographic nuances; searching, ever searching, for an identity to call its own. The maple leaf flutters wildly on winds of national pride, bestriding the snowy caps and lofty towers from coast to coast. This country, riddled with indecision and pride. Are they American? Are they French? Are they French-Canadian? Are they Canadian? Oh the debate rages on and echoes through myriad halls of Canadian dissatisfaction, as indeed it always will. There have been, and I presume there will continue to be, many great "Canadians". I will mention but one: Leonard Cohen, a personal hero of mine - the very epitome of a great "Canadian". Born in Quebec (that'll be French-Canadian then) and a fine ambassador for any nation, in my opinion - as if you care.I visited Vancouver once. I approached this beautiful city with an open mind and an open heart. I spoke, at length, with two "Canadians" of righteous stock, staunch representatives of their country; and they broke my spirit. How selfish and short-sighted, you may say to judge a nation by such a simple criteria, I mean it's only two people for pity's sake! Ah, would that it were quite so straightforward. It's a tortuous tale that ended badly. There is no place for such apparent blinkered "silliness" perhaps, but my mind was set, is set, will forever be set. I cannot forgive them and the nation that bred such creatures. It's personal and as such may seem illogical. There are good and bad wherever you may go. I know these things. I am, I believe, a reasonable man, I am not prone to irrational spite, not given to senseless generalisation. However, I stand by my view and I will not be calling upon Canada's hospitality again in this lifetime. I feel sure that this arrangement is agreeable to both Canada and myself. This mix is a smashing collection of music by many fine "Canadians". I like it. I enjoy the music I enjoy and care not where it may have originated. I am sure that all the artists herein are genuine and lovely folks. They are bound to Canada by birth and, no doubt, feel the internal warmth of "home" as much as any of us. I, therefore, recommend this mix to all with a hearty hoorah! I am happy to meet with, speak with, take repast with and enjoy the creativity of any "Canadians" that cross my path; just don't ask me to visit their homeland, as if.Oh and by the way, cassettes are shit! Doh!

As a young teenager I spent many summers at a bilingual camp on a beautiful lake in rural Quebec and I developed such a love for Canada and Canadians. So it's hard for me to understand how anyone could feel otherwise.

great concept and mix, Sam. I'm fond of Canada, from what I've seen, and of course you know I think cassettes are just fine. Pony Up threw me off my horse, but the rest of this is tops, and features lots of cool stuff from the Great Country to the north. Arcade Fire, Russian Futurists, Death From Above, Wolf Parade and Swan Lake are the ones I liked the most.
