Comment:

I've been wanting to do something like this for a while. Despite my love of twee indie pop, I've always been a strong believer in the shamelessly grandiose rock of acts like Queen, Meat Loaf, Andrew W.K., etc. They combine my inner rock & roller with my fondness for theatrical music numbers. It may not be subtle, nuanced, or, well, respected like a lot of the music featured on AOTM, but this stuff lights the fires of my soul. My ultimate dream would be to have a band that could compose many different genres, but especially monolithic Broadway-meets-punk showstoppers. Not just heavy metal like a lot of the music I ended up using on here, but a sound with flamboyance and razzle dazzle. I wouldn't want merely a barrage of noise or anger, but an epic, complex explosion of everything I feel. It's hard to explain, but it would be a positive thing.

Anyway, I did the best I could to demonstrate at least a certain angle of that vision with this mix. I chose songs that were over-the-top, overwhelming, ridiculous, sometimes fun, sometimes badass, sometimes cheesy, but always soaring at maximum capacity. I wanted to make room for Springsteen, but I just couldn't fit his style in with the overall tone of the record, even though he has plenty of hair-raising opuses in his canon (maybe someday I'll attempt more a gospel-y/folksy version of this theme). I also had a couple Poison songs I was hoping for, but I didn't want the mix leaning TOO much towards the hair metal era.

I'm out of breath just reading the track list. Over the top in over the top-ness. Alot that has been overplayed but the concept is well executed and there are several tunes that I still love on here (the Jarvis and Rocky Horror tracks in particular).

I'm with Mark on this . . . but I'd add that although there are more than a couple of tracks that I dislike, the overall max-out over-the-topness makes this a kind of uber mind-f*ck . . . meaning that you must be the excess-meister. Almost a guilty pleasure masterpiece IMHO. Classic.I'd recommend a competition to get the matching cover art !

Amazing! Loads of guilty pleasures here, not least the opener... for your dream band, try The Fucking Champs- although they are instrumental, they hair-rock with style and flair...

I love this. The songs you picked perfectly match your concept - at least the ones I know.

I'm interested in what Springsteen songs you were considering but ultimately cut. I'm thinking "Hungry Heart", "Thunder Road", "Backstreets", or "Dancer In The Dark". His singles tend to be more theatrical than his album cuts, I've noticed.

Anyway, I love this. This mix reminds me why I need to look at this site more frequently.

How have I not noticed this mix before now??? Another great mix filled with amazing (and fun) songs that you don't find on many AOTM mixes.
