Comment:
This mix is a tribute to AotM's own Sean Lally-one of my closest and most loyal friends--who will be leaving Pittsburgh in the next couple of weeks to further his career as one of the most dedicated educators that I've ever known. As such, I decided that now was an appropriate time to show him the level of influence he's had on my musical taste over the past 15 years (I actually wrote a 1,300-word track-by-track commentary to accompany this mix, but it won't fit here). That said, there's considerably more to my appreciation of Sean. When I met him 15 years ago this month, he was nothing short of a hero to me. Obviously, as anyone can more or less tell from our interaction around these parts, our friendship has deepened and evened out (for lack of a better phrase) since then, but that fact shouldn't obscure the fact that, as well as being an all-around-great guy, great educator, and great musician (his guitar work in Pittsburgh's much-missed, severely underappreciated Frampton Brothers is nothing short of life-affirming), he's a poster boy for everything that's great about Pittsburgh. Hanging out with him-at his various residences over the years, at shows, record stores, restaurants, etc.-has been a particularly eye-opening and inspiring experience for me, particularly at the outset, as he was nearly instrumental in introducing me to aspects of living in Pittsburgh (and the East End, in particular) that are substantially responsible (although I'm sure he would regard that responsibility with mixed emotions) for my decision to return here after I finished law school eleven years ago and are almost too numerous to list. I will say, though, that I will never be able to grab "a couple slices" at Napoli Pizzeria without remembering his fine conversation, spirited debate and warm friendship. Yes, he's only moving four hours away, and yes, I'll still be in touch with him on a fairly regular basis (we haven't actually seen one another as much as we would like over the past few years, anyway, despite the fact that he currently resides one neighborhood away from me), but his move (and, to a lesser extent, the move of his co-Frampton Ed Masley almost exactly a year ago) really does mark the end of an era and I'll miss him terribly. Thanks for everything, Sean/Seanald/Clem/Lallophagus/Snacks/Lally. If anyone wants to read my unedited track-by-track commentary, I'll happily provide it by request. Subtitle by Mr. Drake.Feedback:
Mr. Lally sounds like a great guy -- I don't even know him and I've been inspired by him. Great mix and I adore the Richman, Wray, Monkees... well, this is chock full of top tunes! Bon voyage and good luck to the Lally family!
An apt tribute to a prince of a guy. Love the NRBQ, Modern Lovers, Cynics, Nick Drake, Donner Party, Burritos, Framptons, Zombies and Monkeys picks. End of an era (even though I've been out of the Burgh for 6 years) indeed.
Love it.
I'm really stunned by this, Rob. Every song is just great - I do still like that Frampton Brothers track; it was pretty autobiograhical, I guess. The liner notes you sent were just perfect - how is it that neither of us were hired for that RnR job? I can't say thanks enough. I really can't wait to hear this, though I think I'll save it for the day I pull out of Pittsburgh, headin for that eastern seaboard (or close to it). You're the best, Rob - a real pal, and this is a super sweet gift.
Lovely, Rob. I've never met Sean save for through email, but he really seems to be everything you've said about him. Really sweet, in all ways, this mix. I'd love to read the long version of the notes.
Marvelous.
Yay for the Mummies!
I trust Mr Lally will not be leaving AOTM as I've enjoyed and been educated by many of his contributions. This is a great mix for the move, and his hint is correct, you should have started it with "Six Days On The Road" (as done by the Burritos, among many) just for the opening line. And maybe included Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" just for the "don't it always seem to go" line.
Rob, what a fantastic gesture this mix and liner notes are. Take it from Me, distance needn't diminish friendship, me and the desert dweller are still as close as ever.
Great job Rob - you've captured Sean in 25 tracks nicely. Sean was the first person I really interacted with on this site some 5 years ago. I'm sure we'll be seein' more o' him in the future, but I'll need to get used to a new address to send those cd's to. Good luck Sean !
this is an achingly gorgeous & heartfelt tribute to a wonderful mixer &, obvious from the sincerity of your words, a true friend. each track is a winner, although the zombies, posies, teenage fanclub, flying burrito brothers, galaxie 500 & nick drake are among my favorites - i've also been tossing around the idea of using that beat happening track on a future mix. i'd be interested in the extended liner notes if you get around to e-mailing them to me...
Would love to hear this , Rob.
inspiring! and such a nice gesture, as French Connection says. it's always a bit sad when a good friend leaves the town you've built lots of memories in together.
Happily, I would receive the 1300 word manifesto. Love it, man, nice and tasty throughout.
Telstar is the track that reminds me of Lally since he posted that fantastic Telstar themed mix last year. I feel your sadness, my best pal moved to Oxford ( only about 3 hours from MC ) but only see him once or twice a year. We do still send each other the odd mix CD tho. This looks smashing, I can't wait to hear it....
I'll keep it under 3,000 words, but his looks like a worthy and thoughtful gesture to one of AOTM's most beloved mixers and human beings, Sean Lally. And like Tom Sawyer, he turns up on his own tribute. Pittsburgh won't be the same without him.
Lovely tribute, and dare I say one of your absolute finest! *cap doffed*
amazing stuff to a great guy
What a nice tribute. I feel the love. When my best friend moved to London, I missed him so much I followed suit six months later... aww!
Great mix in and of itself, and a sweet ode to a fine member of the AOTM community. Plus, with two kids in elementary school, I have undying respect for teachers in any shape and form.
Wow, what a tribute! Excellent, Rob.
What a great, heartfelt tribute to a very worthy guy.
I always wanted to travel to Pittsburgh to see you guys sometime. And, yes I'd like to read the 1,300 word liner notes!

Wow, what a phenomenal tribute a great guy!
Splendid tribute Rob. Makes me miss Lally though I've never met him and makes me miss Pittsburgh though I've never been. Good luck with the move Sean.
A wonderful tribute. Thankfully you'll still both be around this same virtual neighbourhood. Best of luck Sean.
Whoa... almost missed this! A great tribute both in words and music. I guess I'm one of the fortunate ones around here who got to spend some time with the two of you together in person. It was great fun to see you guys interact together while browsing CDs in your favorite music store haunt and to swap tales of music discoveries over burgers and brews. Thanks for a memorable Pittsburgh visit. It's put each and every one of both yours and Sean's mixes in a special light.
amazing.
Fantastic mixxer and fantastic mix for said mixxer. Amazing work Rob.
great tribute rob and good luck to sean in his new posting !
Wonderful tribute to a great mixer. Good luck Seanald!
Cool tribute.
Looks interesting! Love Galaxie 500 btw.
Brilliant! Sean "Telstar" Lally has been a great inspiration to me here at AOTM, the very model of mix musicianship, & this is a truly custom-fitting Lally playlist. I can't hardly wait to hear it!
