Comment:

There always seems to be a lot of 1960s pop and soul coming across my
desk. I'm very fortunate that way. So now it's time to go thru the pile
looking for gems, and make a mix.

Many thanks to awesome mixers joey de vivre for the opener/title track and
barrydali for the Crystals track.

In 1963 The Exciters reversed the gender of Gil Hamilton's song and had
a hit with "Tell Him."
Dick Holler and the Holidays were South Carolina soulsters; the 1966 cover
of "Double Shot"
by the Swingin' Medallions
became a frat rock staple.

My personal recollections of the 1960s do not particularly emphasize
the mouth harp, but
here it is on both the Jaynetts and Stonemans tracks.

Manfred Mann had the first recorded version of the Bacharach/David composition
"My Little Red Book," which later got covered by Love and others.
"Under My Thumb" is of course a Stones cover.
"Shop Around" is a cover of the early Miracles hit, and by the way
Smokey Robinson also gets writer credit on "You're The One."
He was really saying something.

KILLER. Its a bit hard to imagine that so much quality pop/soul tracks came out in that ten year span. I guess I had to have been alive to believe it all!

I can't believe that the importance of the mouth harp escaped you back then, Ed!
As for me, a lot more than just that passed me by, e.g. most of the songs on this mix. I have no doubt that it's great, though.

Tippety top Ed, I counsel that you supply some linkage or Anthony may take drastic action, none of us want that...

Sounds like the swingin smokin soulful sixties are here again!
However, strain my brain as I may, I can't BEGIN to imagine what " Snowman, Snowman, Sweet Potato Nose" might sound like - I guess I'll have to beg for a trade to find out?

this was amazing! thanks for the listen. love the Bananarama/Fun Boy Three version of the opener, but had never heard the Velvelettes. "Snowman, Snowman, Sweet Potato Nose" was everything I'd hoped it would be. other favorites are The Ravenettes and Hollies tracks and "Rinky-Dink," of course.

This mix has some really hard to find singles and a few that I had long forgotten about. Happy to see someone else has an appreciation for the "oldies"!
