Comment:
The fourth in an occasional series of imaginary soundtracks to unmade independent films -- in other words, guided more by mood and ambience and flow than for song selection per se. Though Volume 1 was a diverse road trip kinda thing, all over the place (though still in a cinematic sense), this follows more in line with Volume 2 and Volume 3: darker, primarily Americana and marginally goth-influenced, broken up by the obligatory surf-oriented instrumentals. It may also be the best of the bunch, consistency-wise (though I'm still fond of 2). Can't believe it's been a year and a half since the last one, as I love making these, and they give me a chance to use some tunes (particularly instrumentals and more downbeat tracks) that I rarely incorporate into my more typically upbeat mixes. Finally got motivated after getting a few tracks stuck in my head -- I've felt a compelling need to use the opening theme from Grindhouse to open a mix ever since seeing the flick a couple weeks back (a mixed bag of a movie, but no way any AOTM'er walks out without feeling the same way), and a recent spin of Sticky Fingers reminded me that "Moonlight Mile" would be an amazing way to end a movie (though I had to trail off with an ambient instrumental for the closing credits). That Ambulance LTD opening instrumental has also been lying in wait (geez, what a great album), and the insanely moody Brightblack Morning Light disc is simply designed for soundtracks. And the rest just sorta flowed. Close your eyes and enjoy.
Incidentally, for those who care about this sort of thing, I cross-faded the hell out of this puppy. Which pretty much means I can't really rip it to my iPod, and skipping ahead lands you 10 seconds into the next tune, but the flow is great and, really, it's designed to not be played a track at a time.

Feedback:
Ah Pops, another musical masterpiece... nicely woven (and I crossfade the hell outa my mixes too -- 'cause it's all in the mix)
i'm of the opinion that no mix (or album, really) should be skipped about when listening - after all, that's what mixing truly is in essence: taking songs we all know & love & making them flow to tell your own story or set your own theme or mood. if we all skipped songs, the flow is gone, & it's just another gaggle of tunes we all know & love - without the craft behind them. anyhow, that's my rant...
as for this mix, i really really really love the theme - & the songs really do it justice. if ever a song was perfect for a soundtrack, it's "communist daughter" - & sticky fingers is one of my top 10 all-time favorite records, so you got me hooked there. i'll end this incredibly lengthy comment now - great stuff, either way.

Love the NMH, Serge, BJM and (especially) Stones picks.
Looks like it flows exceptionally well! I agree with Rob's picks.
You could save the whole mixed CD as an mp3 track then put it on the iPod...

Love stuff like this. Expertly crafted, your attention to detail has paid great dividends.Beautiful work.
Like that BJM / Niclecreek transition and the Ambulance LTD and Stones tracks especially.
Superb! Excellent concept and the mix includes 3 of my all-time fave tunes in the BJM, Ambulance LTD & Stones cuts.
Well, there's no getting away from the fact that this is an awesome mix. Bravo on that. As you may have noticed over the past year or so, more & more mixes now have downloadable links. Other mixers choose not to either because they don't know how or because they don't want any legal repurcussions etc
Should the industry get on its high horse, there are a billion blogs out there hosting albums ( often months in advance of their release date ). These bloggers will be hit first. Us mix makers will be very far behind in a long queue. My point is, if you spend an hour or so blending these tracks together and you're proud of the result, don't you want people to hear them? I know I'd listen to the mixes!

Sorry I've missed this series for the "original soundtracks" exhibit. Looks wonderful.
Sammy... I think you've sent me instructions before for condensing & posting mixes. I'll see if I can figure it out.
This looks awesome and contains lots of favs.
ARGH!! SMITH (Shoot Me In The Head)!!!! I have only been dying to see Grindhouse from Day One, but my last remaining child said, "But dad... let's wait till it hits the dollar theater!" (Total grindhouse if ever I've set foot in one; the only floors nastier were in porn theaters!) AND now, the weekend approaches, the Old Man is coming up from Florida (SMITH!) and by the time I get a free moment to see it, I will have to content myself with a DVD!!!
Looks like an amazing soundtrack to a film I'd like to see in my imagination (though things turn a little phishy in the end). Wouldn't it be great to get paid to do something like this?! I once saw BJM in a movie. It wasn't pretty.
most of this i'm unfamiliar with but like Music Gnome I enjoy this type o mix - love the Gainsbourg esp.
This Theatre of the Mind tracklist looks amazing and I'm sure it sounds even better.
Serg Gainsbourg, BJM, Interpol, Phish and The Stones are among my favourites. Excellent presentation.

What an amazing list of artists on one mix . . . Howe Gelb and Serge are the main men here for me, but this does look like a belter. Sorry I missed this at the time.
