Comment:

Following the critical drubbing belatedly put upon 1997's Be Here Now, Oasis found themselves in a different position to what they were used to. As the sessions for their fourth album progressed, founding members Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan and Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs left the group, leaving a large burden on the Gallaghers and drummer Alan White. They forged ahead in a daze, wondering what happened and how things could be crumbling. These B-sides, demos, covers, collaborations, and live tracks come from 1999 and 2000. Liam could hardly be arsed, singing vocals on only one b-side and finding time to do a song with Ocean Colour Scene's Steven Cradock for a Jam tribute album. Noel was left to pick up many of the pieces and contributing some fine introspective moments on his b-sides and doing another smashing collaboration with the Chemical Brothers. The highlight may indeed be his reading of To Be Someone, a song fitting for his place at this particular time, and actually, in my mind, perhaps better than the Jam original...
