Here's a challenge for everyone. This is probably now a cliche thing because of High Fidelity and so forth, but I sought out to put together my all-time top 20 side 1, track 1's. I did it in countdown fashion, with my #20 as track 1, and my #1 as track 20. It's a hard thing to do. And you get self conscious, too. I'm thinking "Wow, is it lame that 'Like a Rolling Stone' is my number one?" I guess it is. At the get-go, I made some rules.First, one track from each decade, from the 1960s-2000s, must be on the mix.
Second, the mix must include one Beatles track, even if you are a music snob.
Third, only one song by each artist. This keeps the mix diversified. Though it may not be the most complete "Top 20 Track 1, Side 1s Mix," it will be a good one. Hell, if I had to do this without limiting myself to one track/artist, I'd have a ton of Dylan and Ryan Adams.
The fun thing about this mix is the fact that some artists that appear here aren't even my favorite artists. For instance, I like the Replacements, but I'm not a huge fan. However, "I Will Dare" is one of my personal favorites, and it ranks up with the best track 1s of all time (my opinion, of course).
And of course, the cliches abound in these types of mixes. I have Dylan, the Who, Springsteen, and the Beach Boys closing this one out. I guess it just shows my proclivity toward classic rock...really really classic rock.
Anyway, all moods are visited, and only a few genres sampled. But these, to me, are the 20 best of all time. Or at least the most important in my life.

Ok, so the concept's been done before, but its one of those things that's just good to do. Possibly quintessential.
My classic rock tendencies have mellowed of late, but your mix looks good anyway. It's nice to see a B&S inclusion though. I love the VU track too, but I think I prefer Sunday Morning from VU and Nico :)

PERFECT pick on Costello, same for Springsteen and Dylan...even Velvets! Beatles, hmmm...that's too hard to pick my favorite first track. As for Wilco....my personal pick would be "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart".

Great great great Wilco pick. Same for Springsteen, B&S, and Costello. Can't go wrong with a Dylan track in the #1 slot, no matter how cliche it may be. (My pick would've been Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts, but I'm odd.)
Great Zappa, VU, Who, Springsteen and Dylan picks. I might have to vote for New York, New York for Ryan and Brown Sugar for the stones though. Nicely done.
I really like the concept and you included a lot of really good songs, especially the Beach boys tune that I love. I took up your challenge and submitted my own mix of track 1, side 1 but included only debut albums!
Track 1s Side 1s, almost always awesome. And if not it puts me in a bad mood and sometimes maybe distorts my judgement re: the rest of the album. Maybe. If I did the same O My Soul, Janie Jones, S&D, Baba O'Riley would be definite inclusions. Along with the Beach Boys, VU, REM and Stones choices ( though I may go for Rocks Off instead ). Great, great mix.
The first time I heard "Misunderstood" was when Wilco used it to open a show before Being There came out. I thought "Wow" then, and I think "Wow" now. Great stuff and a great theme.

I love mix challenges, thanks for starting another one, AD! This is so cool. I'd absolutely have The Clash, Beach Boys, Who, and Costello choices you made on my own, so that'll force me to be more creative when I try it out. And no, your picks aren't cliched, they're definitive :)

More info...GOOF: Incorrectly regarded as goofs: "Janie Jones" by The Clash is listed as a "side one, track one." While it is indeed the first track on The Clash's British debut album, and the book was set in England, the film was moved to the USA, where the album started with "Clash City Rockers." But as record geeks, they would have been familiar with the British album as well, and could well have regarded it as the true debut album.Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Gordon mentions "Radiation Ruling the Nation" as one of his favorite side A, no. 1 tracks; he correctly identifies it as coming from the album "No Protection" (an album of remixes, and not the first release of the song). Arguably, this isn't a Massive Attack album, since it's actually remixes by Mad Professor. But the list is not restricted to debut albums, as some misinterpreted it.
Btw...you're selection of Belle and Sebastian, Be Bop Deluxe and Zappa Picks are to be applauded.

man i hear this in my head and it sounds good. though the replacements one, i still think "hold my life" is a little better. ryan adams is good too, one of my favorite songs of his. i'm glad you picked "son of sam" over the more obvious "needle in the hay" or "speed trials".
