Comment:
As obvious as the idea of the content of this mix and the title of it may be, I'm a fairly recent (read: the last three years or so) convert to the charms of Ms. Joplin. And, after careful review of her entire catalog, I've come to the conclusion that, like the Beatles or "Kind of Blue," there's a reason that her most popular songs are her most popular: they are, to me, her best. So here it is: Janis' greatest hits plus some personal favorites, compiled primarily for SwankQueen, as she's been somewhat fascinated by the "40 Year Anniversary" coverage of the Monterey Pop Festival. I must admit, however, that I'm still not the world's biggest fan. I like her relatively well but cannot help but think that she'd be remembered only a-third-to-half-as-fondly had she lived longer than 1970.Feedback:
i've always thought janis had a phenomenal voice, but sometimes suffered from not always having a first rate set of material. great round-up though, the only complaint i'd have is that "maybe" isn't here.
Well, I never really gave the matter of your liking her or not a moment's thought, but I sure as hell hate her. One of thee most overrated singers ever - damn, she downright massacred the songs she covered. And BB&HC always sounded like a glorified high school band to me. I kinda like "Move Over", though . ;)
eXcElLeNt.
i don't normally type like that, but i felt the need.

I was fortunate to see her perform on three occasions each with a different band. Two small venues and a festival. So I guess it was one of those "you had to be there" kind of moments. I had all her albums and seldom played them but oh the memories of those shows. One could only ponder what she would have done with her career had she survived. And two of my favorites didn't make the cut here... 'one good man' and 'maybe'.
Always been a fan and I wholeheartedly agree with your "there's a reason... " conclusion. You hit all my favs here.
Nice collection.
Better she is remembered well for her 60s stuff than to have her now doing a show in Vegas.

insert a woman left lonely for mercedes benz and you'd get my full approval (as if that was what you are waiting for). it is always a good career move to quit when you're ahead. there are plenty of examples of artists or groups who have not produced anything relevant since the fifties or sixties. perhaps music, like poetry, athletics, and sex are young folks games. cash, dylan, and waits come to mind as maintaining a high standard of creativity post age 50. feel free to remind me of others that i am ignoring.
well I'm of the camp that says that it is impossible to make a bad Janis mix (although, I must admit that sometimes you have to pick your moment to listen to some things she has done live !). So nicely done.
I'd have liked to have seen Janis live ( both in concert & not die ). Some great tunes here for me. The obvious ones though, Bobby M, Try, Cry Baby... Talkin of over 50s. I really like Gilert O'Sullivans current album. Though I guess he'll never mentioned in the same breath as Dylan, Waits or Cash!
I was sold the first time I heard her sing the Kristofferson masterpiece. Pearl is one of my favorite albums and matches up well with any female blues singer you can name. When Pearl came out, a fad occurred at my high school-"dirty red bandannas" became the rage.
Because of her life style she was bound to burn out. I agree with brother mahdishain's comment except about sex being a young folks game....

I've been tuning in to Monterey Pop Festival anniversary coverage too, and then I heard a short clip of "Piece of My Heart" on NPR this morning and thought, "I don't think I've put Janis Joplin on any of my mixes..." and I decided to look into that. but then here you've got this thing. don't know her music real well, but "Cry Baby" is one of my favorites.
I have tried to give her a chance on many instances in my life, but I just can't listen to Janis Joplin. I understand why she's so loved, but it just do anything for me. "Piece of My Heart" and "Down on Me" are about the only songs I can get behind - and even then only in small doses.
I'm one with Thomas on this -right down to the only track I find tolerable.Seems to me she was never able to distinguish emoting from emotion & all I heat is hysterical petulance. Not sure about his assessment of Big Brother though -Oh Sweet Mary always struck me as a pretty decent slice of West-Coast psychedila but for JJ's screeching.
I suppose I should say something. Has it really been 40 years? Creezus! Well, I've had a "take it or leave it" approach to Janis and always felt I must be missing the good stuff, knowing only what I've heard on classic rock radio. Thanks for the lesson, as I'm strangely lacking in most music collection staples from that era.
Janis the Late Lady inspires me to score goal after goal after goal in my professional career.
OOOOOH good! but where's 'half moon'?
This introduction disc is complete as far as i am concerned.
