Comment:

Although the Clash have been one of my fifteen or so favorite bands for more than twenty years, they sort of fell from my listening radar until I met SwankQueen. Her uninhibited, ecstatic passion for the Clash (particularly their more dub-centric material) has really inspired me to revisit them over the past year and this (the first of two discs) revision of my prior Clash set is the result. This was one of the tougher single-artist mixes that I've done in awhile; since I posted this more than a week ago, I've even re-tooled the format, converting it to a double-disc "anthology" (i.e., running the tracks chronologically over two discs) instead of keeping it as two separate discs of chronological favorites. Title from what is not only my absolute favorite Clash song but is also one of my twenty favorite songs of all-time.

my personal favorite punk bands are the ramones & the buzzcocks (is it obvious enough that i love first-wave pop-punk?), but the clash are dangerously close. the UK debut is my favorite album of theirs, & "(white man) in hammersmith palais" is also my favorite song of theirs. i'm with terry on this one: top notch from start to finish.

Wow. I just posted my latest mix before seeing this, and it appears I'm not alone in my choice of favourite Clash song. A fantastic & very comprehensive guide to one of THE finest bands ever. Nice work Rob.

I feel the same way you do about the Clash. Probably the first band I ever really got excited about. Saw them open for The Who in Buffalo....wish I could still fit into that tour shirt. I always forget about them until some one mentions them and then I pull out all those records again and love them all over....Thanks for mentioning them.

Well, since they're my favorite band (or thereabouts), I can't bicker at all. And, yes, "White Man" (as I just noted in Sammy's comp) is certainly among their best, if not the best. Nice to see I'm not alone in loving Mick's more pop-oriented contributions ("Stay Free," "Supermarket" and "Card Cheat" are personal faves). I'm far less favorably inclined towards Sandinista's dub experiments -- though deferring to one's better half is ALWAYS the right strategy.

My favorite rock band of all time. I did my own one volume compilation to introduce my oldest boy to The Clash. Nice job.

Great stuff, Rob. Another band who has so many great tracks that my favorite 80 minutes would change from day to day. An admirable project.

I had just become a teenager when I borrowed the first Clash LP.I didn't get them at all.I couldn't understand what they were singing, and bear in mind I come from London. Then I borrowed the Clash songbook from someone at school and copied all the lyrics out.It was a revelation, their genius was revealed to me.For several months my Beatles records gathered dust as I embraced punk.As for my schoolwork...............There are so many great songs on this mix. Most of the debut LP,well it's hard to leave anything off, though I would have included Deny. And Complete Control, sensational. Many a time I've bunged that on and wailed along to it like an irascible hippo.
