in love with the eighties, part one.

Artist Song
phil collins  against all odds (take a look at me now)
the fixx  one thing leads to another
wham!  wake me up before you go-go
naked eyes  always something there to remind me
soft cell  tainted love
peter gabriel  in your eyes
def leppard  pour some sugar on me
adam and the ants  stand and deliver
the cult  she sells sanctuary
joan jett  i love rock and roll
tears for fears  everybody wants to rule the world
human league  don't you want me
paula abdul  straight up
starship  nothing's gonna stop us now
a-ha  take on me
rick springfield  jessie's girl
inxs  never tear us apart
the cure  in between days
men at work  down under
eurythmics  sweet dreams
big black  bad penny
the proclaimers  i'm gonna be (500 miles)
dead or alive  you spin me round
foreigner  waiting for a girl like you
milli vanilli  girl you know it's true
frankie goes to hollywood  relax
toni basil  hey mickey
dexy's midnight runners  come on
aztec camera  somewhere in my heart
talking heads  once in a lifetime

Comment:

110 minutes; for jumpy. my boss frequently asks me to play office dj, and when i ask what he wants to listen to, he always replies with "eighties! yeah!" this reply is typical, considering he graduated in the late 80's from san diego state university (otherwise known as stdsu). as a result, i've decided to make a series of mixes of what i believe are the best of the eighties, excluding most 80's punk rock, since that is an entirely different genre of its own. download available here.

ps i realize that some songs were recorded in the 70's but i'm pretty sure that all of these were released, or at least popularized, in the 80's (for example, toni basil's track was recorded in 1979 but not released until 1982).

Interesting combination of legitimately good music (Talking Heads, Cure), campy classics with kitsch value (Rick Springfield, Soft Cell), and terrible songs that no one should ever have to hear again (Foreigner, Starship).

what makes popkulcher's categorization is who puts what where. i think the majority of this falls in the terrible category but i like straight up so who would listen to me?

Step off Starship, Kulcher! That song and "Mannequin" are cruxes of my childhood :) Although I would agree that there are some abominations in there, "Down Under" most of all. It's a good day when I unavoidably hear that song and manage not to vomit. But then I guess everyone has their horrible '80s choices - now there's a mix idea right there. Except you'd never listen to it. Maybe just a list, then. Anyway, most of this is prime cut

This has to be commended simply because it has both Big Black and Milli Vanilli on it.And it starts with Phil Collins. If that ain't enough to want to rip your ears off.....From the sublime to the ridiculous and lots of unnameable places inbetween.Yeh and I like Straight Up too.
