Comment:

So shoot me--I love noise, dissonance and more rough edges than you can possibly count in tons of the jazz, psych and indie rock that thrills me more than just about anything else... underground hip-hop... first- and second-wave punk... Appalachian folk... country blues... and Steely Dan. Yes, Steely Dan. Kings of ultra-slick, fusion (ick)-inspired '70s rock that happened to be the greatest singles band of the 1970s. Some even call them soft rock (something I'd find difficult to do after listening to any of their lyrics), but I don't care--I call it great through 1978. This double-disc set is a reworking of a two-separate-disc set that I did in 2001 and 2003 (which at the time was subject to some pretty heated debate), and is more or less akin to what I've just done with my Clash collections. This disc covers their first three albums (yes, you're correct, Countdown to Ecstasy is here in its entirety) and part of Katy Lied.

Hadn't thought about these guys for a while. When I was in a dorm, my neighbors across the hall wore out Pretzel Logic.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The only thing I say bad about the guys is they have bad taste in tequila.

Never make excuses for your musical preferences.I like so much bilge but I'll defend my right to like it.I'm not a big Steely Dan fan and I admit I'm only familiar with the obvious ones here.I like Rikki and I always find myself singing along to Reelin' In The Years when I hear it so maybe I'd like some of their other stuff too.

Funny -- SD were one of those bands I truly despised growing up, yet they've grown on me with old age. All I own is their Showbiz Kids 2-cd anthology, which is plenty for me, but I find the songs that used to have me running to change the FM station back in the 70s have a certain appeal nowadays. "Rikki" in particular, a track I lumped in with the other AOR-friendly music that led me towards punk rock rebellion, is now something I just can't get enough of. Weird, huh?

You're hitting right in the ambivalence zone.

Hell yeah, Conroy! Count me in as one who is definitely down with the Dan. Killer set, my friend.

I'm with you on this one Rob... these guys had it all together and I would say it was the non-hit gems that made them special. You won't get that from an anthology. Definitely an album band.

Gotta go dust off the vinyl, I've not listened to these guys for about 15 years!

Yeah, like PK I only own the 2cd best of. I've always thought that'd do me. They've done some fantastic tracks, especially Peg, Showbiz Kids and Do It Again. Should these 2 mixes be linked up I will listen and no doubt enjoy....

Incidentally -- and I say this knowing that Rob is gonna crucify me -- but I do have a hard time reconciling your appreciation for Steely Dan with your utter disdain for Dire Straits. While Steely Dan is certainly a far more technically proficient and musically accomplished act, I tend to view both as having that FM-friendly silky-smooth veneer that is equally worthy of sneering post-punk mockery or mature revisionist reverence. Personally, I can today listen to "Skateaway" and "Do It Again" back-to-back on a lazy Sunday morning over a cup of coffee and achieve yuppie bliss, while 15 years ago I would have stormed out of the room.
