Comment:
As with most of my mixes, I've kept this idea that the best way to introduce people to some really good bands is by pushing their major songs, so called #1's. "The Only Song You Know Anyways" is a compilation of some really great singers and bands who are usually remembered by a single song, Jimi's intro to All Along the Watchtower comes to mind... I guess the point is that one should never underestimate the creative ability of a band, and while pop-divas are good counter examples, i will maintain that if a band can make one good song, it can probably make another.People can also notice that each song leads into the next. Mr. Jones includes watching the bright lights on TV, like Andy Kaufman, inspiration for Man on the Moon. Andy Kaufman, mis-understood artist, like the poets in Poets. Another misunderstood figure is the Hurricaine, by Bob Dylan. Then there's 6th Avenue Heartache sung by Jakob Dylan, son of Bob. Out of the loss in Jakob's song, comes the loss in REM's song. The loss is explained well in Round Here where the Counting Crows describe life without a true passion (or loss thereof). The settling for that loss is shown in Better Man, and a description of that loss continues in Scar Tissue. The confusion ensuing is captured in Purple Haze, then returning back to understanding the past is behind us (cue Under The Bridges). Then comes the last section of rebirth. Alive (whoa-oh I-I, whoa-oh I'm still Alive...). Magic Carpet Ride showing the new growth. Aeroplane, also showing the growth, thanking Music, and All Along The Watchtower, waiting for the rest to follow. Now there's some thinking.
