Comment:
This is a mix about socio-economic class differences. All these songs are about poor boys being in love with rich girls (or vice-versa.) As always, I welcome suggestions for additional tracks. Lyrical proof is below:1. "Poor Side of Town" - Johnny Rivers
That rich guy you've been seein'
Must have put you down
So welcome back, baby
To the poor side of town.
To him you were nothin' but a little plaything
Not much more than an overnight fling
To me you were the greatest thing this boy had ever found
And girl it's hard to find nice things
On the poor side of town.
2. "Down in the Boondocks" - Billy Joe Royal
I love her
She loves me
But I don't fit in her society
Lord, have mercy on a boy from down in the boondocks.
3. "First I Look at the Purse" - The Contours
First I look at the purse!
A woman can be fat as can be,
Kisses sweet as honey
But that don't mean a thing to me
If you ain't got no money
If the purse is fat, that's where it's at.
4. "Patches" - Dickie Lee
Patches, oh, what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
but a girl from that place
would just bring me disgrace
so my folks won't let me love you.
5. "Uptown Girl" - Billy Joel
Uptown girl
She's been living in her uptown world
I bet she never had a back street guy
I bet her mama never told her why.
6. "Common People" - Pulp
She said, "I want to live like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to sleep with common people
I want to sleep with common people like you."
Well, what else could I do?
I said, "I'll see what I can do."
7. "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" - Stevie Wonder
She's a pearl of a girl, I guess that's what you might say
I guess her folks brought her up that way
The right side of the tracks, she was born and raised
In a great big old house, full of butlers and maids.
She says no one is better than I
And I know I'm just an average guy
No football hero or smooth Don Juan
Got empty pockets, you see I'm a poor man's son.
8. "No Scrubs" - TLC
Wanna get with me with no money?
Oh no, I don't want no scrubs.
9. "Dawn" - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
Before you say that you want me
I want you to think what your family would say
Think what you're throwing away
Now think what the future would be
With a poor boy like me.
10. "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" - Paul Simon
She's a rich girl
She don't try to hide it
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes.
He's a poor boy
Empty as a pocket
Empty as a pocket with nothing to lose.
11. "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down" - Patsy Cline
You'll find your ladder of success
Is not on solid ground
And when it starts to tumble
Pick me up on your way down.
Feedback:
Whose idea was this anyway? INGENIOUS!
5-7 kick some serious hyena testes. and that's no lie.
Nicely done.
this is a great idea and well executed for sure!
TLC stands out badly, but at least it fits the theme and the musical contrast makes it interesting. This looks very well thought out, with the quality of music to back it up - seriously, some of these are stone-cold beauties
Thank you! I appreciate the phrase "stone-cold beauties." Of course, some of these songs are pretty bad as well-- you may dislike "No Scrubs," but I think "Patches" is just awful. But I don't care. The theme is overpowering!
Great theme! Most of these I can sing along to.
I love it! Great theme!!
