Comment:

I just happened to be planning out this mix when Mark Petruccelli posted his mix of music from the summer of '71 entitled '71 Stingray. This is a mix of music that was in the top 100 pop charts for the first half of that year. I'm sure you could still hear this music in the summer of '71 as well, so at least some of them could be used in a soundtrack of his "Stand By Me" type movie, or maybe as a prequel to such a movie (this time in the spring of '71). This brings up a topic of music used in time period movies. I noticed that in the movie American Graffiti (1973), even though it was supposed to take place in 1962, much of the music charted in the late '50s. Of course much of the top charted songs play for many years on the radio (or at least they used to back then).Reminds me that the first time I heard Stephan Stills' "Love the One You're With" was when stationed in northeastern New Jersey (while training in the Army) three years after it peaked in the charts (but this was no doubt due to censorship since, in 1971 I was living in Upstate, New York and the big radio stations up there tended to be influenced by the conservative/christian factions. However, I did hear Brewer & Shipley's "One Toke Over the Line" when it was charting which now seems a bit odd.Other Art of the Mixers who I thought of while making this and should also appreciate at least a few of the tunes here would be Steve Raglin and Nomates. Hope the rest of you find something to like here too (click the link on the first song title for the mix). The picture is of Brewer & Shipley.

Was a heck of a year for music, wasn't it Joe? Can't believe I didn't include the Partridge Family on my mix as they were an obsession at the time (wish I still had my PF Lunchbox.) The Brewer & Shipley and Ocean tunes were on my last tracks cut list. Nice job, as always.
