Comment:

From April 19-22, 2001, I attended the Nordic Roots Festival in Minneapolis, MN. For four days in a row, I drove two hours on Interstate 94 to reach the city, and for four nights in a row, I drove the two hours back home, all in the name of tremendously gorgeous music! On Thursday, I saw the Nyckelharpa Orchestra and Groupa. Friday afternoon I attended a dance where I briefly met Ellika Frisell, who was playing the music. She was a very nice lady who gladly autographed my CD of her album. (A quick apology to all the toes I stepped on, and especially to the women connected to them. For some reason that day, I just could not count, "ONE-two-THREE, ONE-two-THREE . . ." Later that night I saw the newly formed Hurdy-Gurdy Project, Ranarim and the dynamic Hoven Droven (During Ranarim's set, I was lucky enough to sit next to the extremely lovely Sofia Karlsson!) On Saturday, I opted to miss Maria Kalaniemi & Aldargaz's afternoon show, as the long drives were really starting to wear me down, not to mention the lack of sleep. (I'm only now recovering.) I did manage to make the three evening shows, Ellika Frisell solo concert, the extrodinary SWAP, and the ultra-extrodinary Hedningarna (Instrumental)! Then on Sunday, despite the constant rain, I saw Harv and Bukkene Bruse, then was totally blown away by a mind-shattering set by the legendary Varttina! I fell in love with each and every one of those singers. This tape is but a small memento of that by-gone festival. The first twelve songs on Side A represent each of the performers from the festival (The Hurdy-Gurdy Project does not have an album out.) The rest comes from discs that I bought at the festival. I spent almost $350 on music alone that weekend! I think it's safe to say that Northside Records will be staying in business for some time to come.
