Comment:
My third monolithic double-disc FTHOI monster, compiled at SwankQueen's while she was putting together her very own offering (what else would two moon-eyed mixing geeks do if they spent five days together?). While hers is a gorgeous study in the twisted-yet-cerebral flow that is her trademark (what other mix have you heard recently that includes "Heart of Glass," Fear, and Thai elephants playing specially-designed instruments?), mine heads into uncharacteristically uber-commercial territory. I can't imagine making a mix that contains more top 10 hits. I've been waiting for SQ to use "Drawing Curtains" and (especially) "Deep Red Bells" since she hipped me to them close to a year ago; now that she finally has done so (see her last two entries), I was overjoyed to be able to include them on this mix. Thanks again to SQ for her inspiration. Title by the Slits.Feedback:
this is really incredible, rob, i mean really unthinkably fucking great, one of the best i've seen on this site, nevermind from you - i have to say that i've always thought of STP as one of the most underrated bands of the 90's, unfairly maligned by music snobs & critics, who were predominantly an amazing singles act (scott weiland's swirling neo-psychedelic melodies & the sugar rush of their guitars are instantaneous) - &, funny enough, off the wall has been on constant rotation on my end lately, possibly my favorite dance record of all time - favorites here (this is going to be hard) include the bowie, VU, monkees, MBV, rufus, clash, temptations, MJ, arctic monkeys, neko case, magazine, gillian welch, STP - i would kill for a physical copy of this (please?) - p.s. sorry for the unreasonably long comment, but this grabbed me & wouldn't let go
Soooo good. Love the Breeders/Petula pairing. I can't go on a run of more than 2 songs that I know aside from that great Milkmen - Welch stretch. Viva the double disc, reminds me to finish my own...
Lots of good stuff to hear.
my brain hurts and i love it.
Looks like a great listen.
Much, much to enjoy here. I agree with your thoughts about MJ: it's pretty sad that such talent got shot to hell by self-inflicted controversies, but thanks for the reminder of what once was...
You know, I *can* think of other activities that could keep two madly-in-love mixing geeks busy for a while. But, clearly, it would be against my own best interest to disclose this knowledge; after all, I want to see you two keep those mixes coming.
I'm listening to this right now and it's great. I will say more later!
Much joy to be found here. I suppose I'm one of those people who would instinctively slag STP even though, in all honesty, I've never really listened to 'em. And, sorry, however talented MJ may have once been, just not something I can imagine playing voluntarily (and, hey, shout-out to the obvious but oh-so-sublime Off The Wall joke in a recent Flight Of The Conchords). The Dead Milkmen track was one of the signature tunes of my college radio dj'ing days (though the AIDS joke dates it a bit, alas).
As for Shatner -- yes, you likely will consider this sacrilege, but I think his cover of Pulp's "Common People" trumps the original.

Only you would call a mix that has Buck 65, Beefheart, Wild Man Fisher, the Dead Milkmen and Magazine uber-commercial. (Although I must admit to doing a spit-take when I mis-read Furry Lewis as Huey Lewis) Props for the VU, War, Temps and Steely Dan tracks.
So so good. Too many tracks to mention. Commercial? If the Rufus was ...and Chaka Khan, then maybe..
Try as I might , I can't Image a mix with Ash Ra Temple and The Godz along with Pet Clark and MJ. Kudos to you, man. Your creativity knows no bounds. This is pretty great, I must admit there are songs on here that I can't stand, but plenty I love as well.
Now that is one rack in a 2nd hand shop i want to come across...you outdid yourself

Some very surprising choices here, Rob. Glad to see MJ make an appearance here, as I don't loathe him nearly as much as you do (or at all, really, but that's for another time). As for Shatner, I recommend checking out the "Has Been" album he did with Ben Folds. There's some surprisingly moving stuff on there.
Briliant & Beautiful. just simple.
It twists, it turns, it's nuts and inspired. Great work Rob and yeah, 'Billie Jean' is a monolith. Well placed here, too.
Thanks for the downloads, nice combos here (Clash/Beefheart, SD/Gillian)
lots of great stuff here, Rob; old favorites [Blondie / Breeders / Neko Case / Michael Jackson / My Bloody Valentine, The Monks] and plenty of new ones too [War, Petula Clark, Wild Man Fischer songs, but especially the Pink Mountaintops track and the Magazine cover of "Goldfinger!"] funny, because two days ago I mentioned "Billie Jean" as an example of a Michael Jackson song that everyone knows, and suddenly it's popping up everywhere. heard it in my car yesterday, on your mix this morning, and then it was playing at Taco Del Mar today during my lunch break. help! awesome mix.
Never cared for STP, but other than that this mix is damn good. Like that The Temptations to Dizzie stretch.
Impressive as always. Sorry I missed its debut!
