Comment:

Really, as a grade-school student in the '70s, when it comes down to brass tacks, what is there to say? :-) All pre-solo albums studio tracks, since throwing Alive! into the mix (figuratively and literally) would have negated the use of any corresponding studio verions. To be filed (figuratively only) next to my AC/DC and ZZ Top mixes. For lo-fi jr, although not by request.

i can't believe you made this! i find myself constantly having to defend myself for my love for pre-'78 KISS (mainly destroyer, the classic debut & everything in between). i can't help it, my dad had me listening to KISS before even the beatles - sleazy, theatrical proto-punks (at least on the debut, in my eyes) - i applaud you, rob!

Except for your expertise, i would be hard-pressed to pay attention, but I always enjoy your enjoyment. Rock on.

Oh, you silly boy! But, sure, I was in junior high at the time, so it was hard to ignore them. And how can you not admire whoever thought to himself, gee, maybe we should rip off the New York Dolls, only by playing even more poorly... oh, and painting our faces! And, yeah, a couple of these are almost legitimately decent songs ("Calling Dr. Love," "Christine Sixteen"). Definitely chose the right cut-off point (though I'd make an exception for Ace's note-for-note cover of "New York Groove").

Yes, yes, yes! Great stuff - really undeniable hooks here. Man, I was just thinking about doing one of these, as I'm really into "Shock me" nowadays - it'll be on an upcoming mix, in fact. Hell yeah! The funniest thing about Kiss for me is how much I worshipped them in junior high school, despite the fact that NONE of their songs ahd anything to do with me or my life - I mean, they are heinously sexist ... or is that sexy? Rock and roll, Satan, and comic books .... someone finally got it right. And (other than Sonny and Cher, when I was too young to appreciate it), Kiss was my first concert - 1978, I think?

I do have to take issue with PK's comment below about the "poor" playing. I really disagree, especially when compared to the NY Dolls, whose playing doesn't do much for me. I think that Kiss had some genuinely great musical moments. Ace Frehley is a guitar god, and the other playing was pretty good for pop-metal.

I have a friend, roughly your age Rob, who loves Kiss like no other. I forgave him and I forgive you also. Obviously that statement reflects more about me.... I can't help think Kiss was a gimmick rather than a band, I can listen to "New York Groove", any time, any place.

Well, you learn something every day here at AOTM...I never knew Ace's New York Groove was a cover version...Thanks Pop! And as a veteran of The Kiss Army (served in the Parent's Liquor Cabinet Brigade, 1976 - 78), I'd like to thank Rob for Supporting The Troops!!!

it's a freaky coincidence, but I wore Ace Frehley face makeup to work today - and now you post this mix. anyway, I'd love to hear it. My brother bought a Kiss LP when I was ten, and my grandmother sternly informed him that KISS stands for "Knights In Satan's Service." watch your back, Rob.

Destroyer was the first album I ever owned (my older brother gave it to me for Christmas in '76) and it made a tremendous impression on a first grader.... Also, I just recently stumbled across both Detroit Rock City and Beth on the radio. Hey, I admit it, I still have a soft spot in my heart for Kiss. Great music, Rob, and I hope that when you do the artwork, you use a drop of your blood in the ink...

Love the debate these kind of mixes provoke. I'm probably in the 'not my thing' camp but freely admit I know precious few of these songs.

At 6 or 7, my cousin always felt much cooler than I was because I was listening to Jim Croce and Glen Campbell and he had the Kiss albums, action figures, posters. Of course, he later got into Poison, while I had my cerrebrum fairly well twisted off by Bobby D. 12-14 are my favorites though, looking back nostalgically.

I've never really cared for cartoons. Give me the Heartbreakers over Kiss and the New York Dolls any day. Johnny Thunders' or Mike Campbell's.

Have to admit that I did have a guilty collection of KISS singles and albums (although I lost interest after Alive 2). Every now and again, I hear (say) Cold Gin and remember what a great band they were and how much pleasure they brought - oh for a download link that I can use ! And Cliff is lying !!
