Comment:

This mix is for hemizen, Mesh, Mike Eternity, and Doowad who all wanted more from a 1983 mix than I produced in my last effort. This one could have been heard at the end of the year because two of the tracks (7 & 17) were issued late in the year and peaked in 1984. I'm a big fan of Bob Seger, and even though I would have preferred to save his song used here (track 5) on a '79 mix (it charted bigger then than it did in '83), I think it helps the mix immensely. Some artists I avoided in both of my '83 mixes were Michael Jackson (who had 7 charted hits in that year), Pete Townsend of The Who (Eminence Front), Bono of U2 (New Year's Day), and Phil Collins (You Can't Hurry Love, I Don't Care Anymore, and I Can't Believe It's True). For some reason I find all of their voices irritating (well less so for Jackson and Townsend, but they were excluded for other reasons too; I almost opened with The Who number, the last one to chart before Townsend's solo carrier, but then thought better of it). Could it be that their vanity colors their vocal cords in a put offish manner? Well, hopefully my pet peeves won't spoil your fun and that there is enough good music here for you all to enjoy. One last thing... I should have used the shorter version for track 13 (sorry about that).

Less of a "what if" than the previous version, but still Maniac over Eminence Front? I like a lot of it, but Billie Jean knocked out by the Theme to Cheers? To each his own, I love the Kinks, Pat Benetar, Dexy, madness, Eddy Grant, Bowie and Prince. Thanks for leaving off the Phil Collins, but not sure about two ZZ tops and no U2? Well, maybe you'll inspire us to make our own! Thanks for the download as well.

Nice mix. I am in sync with your decisions to avoid. I am just stunned to find out that Koyaanisqatsi did not chart. ;-)

I like this one a lot better, but still some head scratchers (Theme from Cheers? Two ZZ Top?). And despite his subsequent metamorphosis into Jacko, 1983 belonged to Michael Jackson and Thriller: some inclusion seems obligatory. Really like the inclusion of 1, 9, 11, 13, & 15-18.

Now see, the exclusions here I totally understand. U2, Jackson, Townsend, and Collins have their moments, but yeah they can be long in the tooth and occasionally just grating, even during their glory days.

I consider it a private caveat to me that you included the Ramones cover. I love them and that album and that blessed song, but I don't see why they scored a coveted spot on the mix without the song actually charting. Just that damn good, ay? Indeed.

Great to see The Tubes, that infernally likable Bob Seger song, Madness (I prefer the longer version, myself), Cheers, and Cyndi Lauper amongst others. Quite a time capsule. I don't have any complaints...even the irritating ones have found a good home here, and I would like to hear them again in this context (i.e. "Electric Avenue", Donna Summer). And kudos for previously promised "Koyaanisqatsi" theme. An unlikely but very interesting track (and deserving of more fame). You're one a kind, Joe
