Comment:

In the spirit of my recent chronological overhauls of the Beatles, Dylan and the Beach Boys, this is my revamped version of my triple-disc Kinks mix. While I've always absolutely adored this band at its peak (1965-71), I may have been overly dismissive of their post-'71 output when compiling my previous editions and wanted to rectify this revision by including several tracks from the next ten years that, in their own way, almost match (or at least hint at) the level of greatness of their classic period. Additionally, Doug Hinman's All Day and All of the Night tome has now allowed me to place these songs as close to the order in which they were actually recorded as I am ever going to be able to determine. Although this disc ostensibly covers their decline, some of my absolute favorite Kinks songs ("Young and Innocent Days", "God's Children", "Strangers", "Oklahoma U.S.A.", "Victoria" and "20th Century Man") feature here. Cuts from this entire series were *incredibly* painful and the Last Tracks Cut (TM) from this disc were "Have a Cuppa Tea", "Sitting in My Hotel", "Willesden Green", "Father Christmas", "Got to Be Free", "Yes Sir, No Sir", "Mr. Churchill Says", "Powerman", "Lola" and "Rats."

proof positive that even when they weren't at their peak, they were still better than most of their contemporaries - great stuff, rob, "strangers" is a particular favorite...

the kinks may have been on the decline but i was on the incline and i thoroughly enjoy their output from my high school and college years. i was looking for here comes flash, cricket, jack the idiot dunce, sleepwalker, low budget, and come dancing. perhaps i need to do my own four disc kinks series.

I agree on the come dancing, which was my gateway into there entire oeuvre. Father Christmas/Lola and the others, I think there is a 4th disk of material at least left over. But great job, you can always count on us to nitpick!

If I'd have made this 3 dics set I'd of course been mighty proud. However, the omission of Lola would have bugged me, even if there are X amount of Kinks songs I prefer. And Come Dancing? Well, that song was plying on the radio the day I became a man. Too much information? Probably.
My favorite Kinks track is probably Wonderboy. I've no idea why, or House In The Country, which not only doesn't make the mix(es) but doesn't even make the last tracks cut selections..
Never mind, I love the Kinks, who doesn't?

Rob - You should put all the Last Tracks Cut on a 4th ("LTC[tm]") bonus disc! Wonderful compilation -- Preservation, indeed!

The Kinks too me is the quintessential British band from the 60's. Tons of hooks, simple and catchy melodies and a sinister sense of humour! I love this band. I like them better than the Beatles, which always gets me in trouble. But I never backdown from a fight from those farts! Rob, this is pretty darn good set you sequenced... and I almost agree with all of your picks (I would have "Session Man" and "Lola" in mine)! Nice work.
