Comment:
This mix is titled a bit cryptically, but what it means is that I picked only songs that reached below #31 on the Billboard Top Pop 100 charts for the year of 1988. I wanted to make a mix that avoided the big hits and I decided that this was a good year to choose from. This mix features songs by Depeche Mode and Tracy Chapman. I included all the songs by Depeche Mode that peaked in the Top 100 for that year. Tracy Chapman had three numbers charting that year as well, but one of them was in the top 10 so it didn't get included here (that song should appear in my companion mix for this year, coming soon, of songs that reached #31 or better in the charts). Also, whereas Depeche Mode had songs charting this year from their seventh album, the songs by Tracy Chapman were from her self titled debut album (the picture is of her). As usual, you can access the mix by clicking on the first song title.<!-- -->
Feedback:
"Jealous Guy", "Talkin' Bout a Revolution", "Handle with Care", "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" and "What a Wonderful World" still appeal to me.
Oddly enough, I spent last night revisiting the Communards, so it's nice to see it pop up on someone else's mix!
Even more beyond-the-ordinary from the invaluable folks at AOTM. I love how often and interestingly you guys twist convention this way to where it's not alienatingly different, but different enough to be fresh again rather than a retread of the same most popular songs. You're an esteemed member of this club, RetroJoe, and you've done it again :)
This package rocks! Please do the 1989 to 1993 sets soon - especially 1990 as that was my faveourite year for music ever
Good mix of the not-so-often-heard. Oddly, I don't feel instantly transported back in time as with other year-specific mixes. I guess that's a result of these not being overplayed top 10 and etched into my cerebral cortex.
